Janita Singh A WINTER safety checklist has been issued by NSW Fair Trad- ing reminding homeowners to check household heating ap- pliances and taking extra care buying and using them. Each winter, NSW Fire Brig- ade deals with house fires, mostly caused by unattended heaters, uncleaned chimneys, electrical faults and faulty elec- tric blankets. Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said all homeowners should pay attention buying and using household heating appliances, electric blankets and hot water bottles. ''Gas and electrical ap- pliances and products can pose a significant risk to life and property, if used in dangerous settings or ways,'' he said. ''Putting heaters too close to bedding or bringing external heaters into an enclosed space has previously proved fatal for families.'' Some safety tips to follow: Do not place room heaters too close to furniture, shag pile rugs and other furnishings. Do not allow children or pets to play, stand or sit too close to heaters. Gas heaters must be certified and should be serviced every two years or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
