LAWN MAINTENANCE LIMIT WINTER'S DECLINE EASY WAYS TO KEEP A GREEN SHEEN Aeration of your lawn will help with the germination process. Janita Singh AN important task for home gardeners during the cooler month is lawn maintenance. The colder months can drain the life from your lawn. But for the informed gardener, there are ways to limit the decline of your lawn that will keep it looking healthy and full of life all through winter. With the shortening of day- light hours, lawns have less time for photosynthesis, which is how plants obtain their food and energy. Synonymous with lawn main- tenance in Australia, mower and lawn care equipment com- pany Victa says you can combat this by increasing mowing heights to leave more green leaf to increase the food supply to the grass. As a general rule, its also wise not to cut your grass lower than 2.5cm. During the cooler months, grass grows slowly, so it's im- portant to not scalp your lawn, as it will brown and weaken the grass, allowing more weeds and diseases to take hold. Your lawn should only be mowed about once every three or four weeks. This is also a good time to feed your lawn. Colder months are perfect for seed germination. Aeration will help with the germination process. 4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 19, 2012 MB MAINTAINING YOUR GRASS AT ITS BEST WINTER lawn care tips from Victa A winter tune up: Check all your lawn- care equipment is in good work- ing order. Mower blades should be sharp with parts serviced. Removing weeds: Weeds can get a foothold and be- come a problem. Broad leafed (non-grass) weeds can be controlled with herbi- cides. Examples of broad leafed weeds are dandelions, lawn daisies, clover, cud- weed and thistles. Apply herbicides directly to the weeds or spray over the entire lawn. Aerating lawn: Aerating loosens the soil and lets nutrients and moisture reach the roots. Easiest way is to use a garden fork -- push it firmly into the ground, wiggling it around, then re- peating every 15cm. Testing pH levels: To op- timise your lawn, it helps to know how acidic or alkaline your soil is. Purchase a kit at your hardware store.
