FLEXO Magazine : June 2012
Kelly VandenBosch updated Forum attendees on standards changes that affect the business side of flexo. He also illus- trated that X-Rite’s new XRGA calibration brings together leg- acy X-Rite and Gretag Macbeth equipment calibration. The new inter-model color agreement is optimized for advances in color science, so that customers will enjoy high quality data exchange between instruments. Below he answers, in detail, a number of questions concerning this new calibration. FLEXO: Why, 15 months after the original change, does the ColorMaster still not function wholly acceptably with bugs still being ironed out? VandenBosch: The current version for Color Master is 8.5 .1 and it was released in early December 2011. The prior version, 8.4, which was released in June 2011, enabled transforms but did not accommodate all of the unique situations uncovered in some legacy customer databases. X-Rite has sought to be reactive and thorough. This can be seen in version 8.5 .1, which has specific prompts for the end user. Version 8.5.1 also has better management of large numbers of different historical data permutations that import into Color Master. FLEXO: Why change both X-Rite and Gretag instruments rather than moving one to the other? This could have disrupted many users. VandenBosch: X-Rite represents precision and accuracy to customers in many color critical workflows. The choice was made not to compromise the most technically accurate XRGA calibration standard solution. At the same time, new changes in ISO 13655 further confirmed the need to prepare customers for the next generation of color standards, multiple color data types and advanced color data communication; such as the CxF3 format. FLEXO: Can you describe how X-Rite internally calibrates its instruments to XRGA? Is it white point only; white and black; or white and colors? VandenBosch: Since 2010, all new X-Rite Graphic Arts hardware has conformed to XRGA metrology. The most central component, starting with a well controlled ISO 17025 internal metrology system at X-Rite, is the white calibration function and it’s conformance to NIST traceable master standards. Additional tuning of the hardware’s system response removes any effect of historical or legacy offsets to prepare for the best common future industry accepted performance. In addition to the hardware focus, the PANTONE color products are also fully compliant with XRGA metrology. FLEXO: How are other spectro manufacturers able to correlate to the XRGA standard? VandenBosch: A manufacturer starts with a systemic metrology system. Several of the minor XRGA hardware factors are related to individual proprietary technologies that 866.282.7697 fx: 800.223.6869 www.AndVre.com info@AndVre.com Premier Service Industrial Products Distributor theDiff erence!
