color consistency. CGS customers now have access to the Color Engine data- base of spot color ink profiles directly from the ORIS Color Tuner // Web appli- cation providing absolute accuracy and integrity in even the most complex and demanding packaging environments. MacDermid Printing Solutions released its new Accent coating plates and LAVA 5080 thermal plate processor at drupa. The LAVA 5080 processor creates plates up to 50-in. x 80-in. MacDermid Accent coating plates allow printers to image and produce coating plates on their existing UV CTP devices, resulting in better control of the workflow and printing schedule. This new coating plate can be processed in water and is compatible with most UV and aqueous varnishes. MacDermid also announced that it will expand its LUX Platmaking tech- nology through the development of “LUX in-the-plate,” a technology that incorporates the flat-top dot benefits of the LUX process into the flexo plate itself, eliminating any extra steps in the platemaking workflow. Field testing of LUX in-the-plate is expected to begin later this year, with the goal of com- mercializing this product in 2013. Finally, MacDermid’s LiquifleX Platemaker is said to combine the benefits of liquid, such as low plate cost and flexibility of operation, with the simplicity of sheet platemaking. LiquifleX allows the opera- tor to set up the platemaking process without calculations or guesswork. Kodak’s FLEXCEL Direct System, commercially launched at drupa, uses innovative, energy-efficient, high-power laser engraving to produce superior quality press-ready elastomer sleeves with increased production through- put. Beta site customers have been impressed with the increase in print quality, greater consistency, and faster press setup times. The FLEXCEL Direct System includes hardware, workflow, and media that result in simple and straightforward operation. It is designed to optimize engraving speed and ink compatibility and at the same time increase shelf impact while driving production efficiency. Fujifilm introduced a flexo focused multi-channel platesetter--FLENEX DLE (Direct Laser Engraving) B2 CTP. It is credited with extremely high qual- ity image reproduction. Compared to common LAM (Laser Ablation Mask) systems, Fujifilm’s FLENEX DLE system has been optimized as a quick and eco-friendly way of making flexo plates. The system eliminates the multiple processing steps (UV exposure, solvent or thermal processing and drying) that are required with current LAM tech- nologies, which in turn creates a much more streamlined process and allows companies to make better use of their resources. The FLENEX DLE system is eco-friendly as it removes the need for the multiple pieces of equipment associated with the current LAM plate- making process, and is completely 100 percent free of VOCs. Xeikon stepped into flexography with the unveiling of its ThermoFlexX line of Imagers, which the company claimed are based on mature technology and proven digital workflow solutions. The processors are said to enable custom- ers to consistently produce high-quality digital flexographic and letterpress plates at resolutions of 2,540 or 5,080 dpi. Advanced clamping design allows plates to be mounted directly on to the drum, while uniquely designed vacuum sliders offer the flexibility to use plates of any width. There is no need to cut the plates to fit a dedicated vacuum zone, thus allowing the use of cut-off scraps. ThermoFlexX processors feature ergo- nomic plate mounting and a hybrid drum that offers flexibility of holding plates in place either by vacuum or by magnetics. ContiTech has developed a brand new industrial process for manufac- turing flexo-printing plates for flexible packaging as roll goods. With its four flexographic printing plates – CONTI® Laserline CSX and CSC, CONTI® Laser- line CCX for direct printing on corru- gated board, and the CONTI® Laserline CSL coating plate – ContiTech Elasto- mer Coatings can service the needs of a broad market.
