FLEXO Magazine : June 2012
condition of the roll can save valuable press time. When start- ing a job, you can return to the specifications of the character- ization and run to the numbers with a plate package made to the characterization and the same tested and certified inks. FIRST 4.0 supplies several templates for anilox roll inventory management, press characterization run conditions data and press side specifications sheets. These templates are located on the FIRST 4.0 CD under sample documentation. Use of these tools will greatly help communication of the pressrun conditions to all members of the press team and supplier team. Communication through all members of the print team is criti- cal to success; as FIRST has stressed from its start in 1997. Because the life of an anilox roll can last several years — when handled properly — it is good to keep updated information on the roll’s condition. Anilox rolls can be mea- sured throughout their life and tracked to determine wear or cleanliness issue. Regular review of the roll engraving, edges, journal or sleeve conditions are critical to avoid unexpected down time or print waste on press. Most anilox suppliers are able to put roll ID information on the ends of the engraving. This is an opportunity to develop an inventory numbering system instead of just using engraving specifications and the supplier serial numbers to track the roll. ANILOX ASSESSMENTS A full audit of the roll inventory can be performed where all anilox rolls are measured and assessed over the period of a few days, once or twice a year. The rolls are generally measured using one of the current instruments or a micro- fax impression of the engraving that is then read back at an anilox supplier’s plant. This gives a magnified assessment of the engraving at several points on the engraving face. In ad- dition, a visual, macro inspection for surface and edge dam- age is done, which can define runability. This can take days to complete in a large pressroom but gives a good snapshot of that point in time. If you get the audit, please review the data and the images, as it can provide preventative information. Too often the report goes into a file drawer only to be pulled when there is a problem later. What happens between these audits, as the press still needs to run? The press operators or quality team can also do anilox assessment on a regular basis if they have the tools.
