build, highly saturated inks require three-to-four colors to build, which can be difficult to manage. FLEXO: Is sourcing going to be a problem if ECG printers are all using the same single pigment inks? EDWARDS: Sourcing the pigments is a constant effort. Con- sistent supply is possible and has been commercially man- aged for several years by the leading ink companies. FLEXO: Can green or orange process ink have the same properties, like drying and strength, as CMYK? EDWARDS: These pigments can be formulated with the same technology as CMYK—drying, resolubility and stability. They will handle the same on press. The strength/density for the green/orange is not as high as the CMYK, usually around 1.15 density on the green for example. FLEXO: Which is the finest line screen anilox you recommend to achieve color density? How many BCM’s? EDWARDS: Today, 1000-line screen with 1.8 bcm is used commercially in achieving FIRST densities with solvent/water technology. Control of the ECG approach is the same as spot color. The equipment in the field can be used to control the process-issues with the proper filters on densitometers for the orange, green and violet.
