FUNCTIONAL AND FRIENDLY LATEST DESIGNS AND TRENDS Susan Redman Eurocucina showstopper: This red kitchen is part of a new line from Hacker called Identity, designed by Claudia Klein Zeggelink. Cobalt blue is one of the eye-popping colours popular at Eurocucina 2012. KITCHENS Details: To book a design consultation at Freedom Kitchens, phone 1300 885 435 or visit freedomkitchens.com.au. AS the social hub of the home, kitchens are presenting designers with new challenges to create rooms that aren't merely func- tional but family-friendly, too. Eurocucina, a biennial event in Milan, brings together the top kitchen designers from Italy and beyond, and gives them the chance to present their imaginative sol- utions on how to incorporate high- tech functionality with aesthetics. Recently returned from the in- fluential fair, Susan Hasler, Natio- nal Sales Manager for Freedom Kitchens in Sydney, nominates five of the newest concepts. The stand-out trend, according to Hasler, was the juxtaposition- ing of kitchen cabinets. ''Stacked cabinets at varying heights and open shelving are being show- cased in a myriad of design pos- sibilities,'' she reports. As for colour, citrus shades such as tangerine, lemon and lime were prevalent. ''Coupled with black or white, and timber and glass ma- terials, the effect is striking and gives people scope to add person- ality to a kitchen,'' says Ms Hasler. Cobalt was another popular colour, she says. ''Deep and luxur- ious, it pops perfectly against white, plus it complements natu- ral wood, and looks sleek and modern next to stainless steel appliances.'' Benchtops, she observed, are going extreme. ''They are either super chunky at 100mm thick or slimline at 12mm or less. Combin- ing benchtop thicknesses, as well as heights and materials, is a continuing trend and a sure-fire way to ramp up the style factor in any kitchen.'' It's predicted, too, that as dining becomes more communal, purpose-built dining tables will be brought into the kitchen space. These can double as workspaces. Another kitchen trend Ms Has- ler noted is the prevalence of industrial and textural finishes. ''Concrete surfaces are uber- chic whilst the popularity of stain- less steel hints at the commercial kitchen. It's a nod to the rise and rise of celebrity chefs and the cooking shows that display them.'' Designers are demanding that stone surfaces sport a new tactile twist with a raw, natural finish that complements the growing trend towards organic, earthy- inspired spaces. ''Mixing materials and exper- imenting with combinations of gloss and timber, stone or glass, creates a very exciting kitchen,'' says Ms Hasler. Another impressive Eurocucina feature was clever lighting, which is becoming more affordable thanks to today's longer-lasting LED lighting. ''Strip lights around an island bench, once available through high-end kitchens only, are impressive, affordable and give the gorgeous illusion of float- ing furniture,'' she reports. ''Recessed cabinet lights create a glow for a relaxed ambience whilst directional accent lighting is popular for highlighting signifi- cant design elements in a room.''
