Inside LANEWAYS IN SPOTLIGHT GET INTO THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT KITCHENS TAKE BOLD APPROACH SHIFT TO A CLEAN, MODERN EDGE LOOK IS DISTINCTLY AUSTRALIAN Susan Redman For a new rustic look, combine sleek interior design ideas with textured furniture and fittings, such as this large natural wooden wreath pendant from Beacon Lighting. STYLE TIPS Texture: Choose wooden furniture that shows off the grain. Knots and crossgrains are particularly impressive. Fun: A porch swing is a great idea, but a cosy daybed stuffed with mismatched cushions on the veranda or on the deck will also do the trick. Craft: Braided or rag rugs in plain block colours or with a simple wide stripe look effective on bare floorboards. Utility: In the dining room, display enamelled tin coffee pots and dinnerware or simple ceramics with patterns inspired by natural forms. Comfort: A bed made from logs can look great or ghastly, so opt for a simple modern design and buy bedlinen with a woodland-inspired design. Simplicity: Shaker-like minimalism is well suited to kitchens. Ladder-back chairs look at home alongside open shelving, a soapstone sink, wide-plank wood floors and zinc-topped benches. Light: Lamp shades and pendants made from twigs or leaf-shapes will create interesting shadows . RUSTIC DECOR IT makes good sense to wait a while when a new trend appears to see if the style sticks around. When it does, it's usually because the trend has proven so popular (even a favourite with de- signers and stylists) that it morphs into new versions on the same theme. Sometimes it branches out to search for variations. This has happened to the rustic, outdoorsy look. It started with a Scandinavian sensibility with lots of blonde wood and whitewash and birch trees, trunks, branches and small birds appearing on everything from textiles to wallpapers. Soon after, inspiration came from American log cabins filled with twee cam- per memorabilia, checks and plaids, and moose and deer motifs. Now it seems the style has shifted again with a clean, contemporary edge that looks, well . . . distinctly Australian. Bright modern colours in sun-lit interiors and simple furnishings characterise the new rustic rendition. And it's easy to create. There are only two things to consider. One, place a few strategic pieces in the room and, two, keep to a fairly restricted but warm and bright colour palette. Second-hand furniture finds are spot-on choices, especially if they have a few worn patches and scratches. Of course, a tree trunk or log stool, table or bench will immediately promote the style, but don't overdo it. Antler lamps, pine cones, hanging tin lanterns as well as taxidermy animal heads are examples of where the look has been and gone. Stick to small decorative ideas which are more con- ceptual -- twiggy textures, crafty knits and metallic finishes with a dull sheen.
