THE POWER OF PASTELS NEW DECO COLLECTION Susan Redman Details: Catherine Martin's Garden Party rug, available through Designer Rugs Australia, 1300 802 561, designerrugs.com.au These furnishings, including Catherine Martin's Garden Party rug, show how pastels work in a modern home. HOME DECORATING STYLE STATEMENTS ART NOUVEAU This new art style reigned from 1880 until just before the first World War. It has elongated, sensual lines with sprouting vines and flowers, creating a whimsical romantic appearance. The patterns are based on stylised natural forms, eg butterflies and dragonflies, orchids, irises, weeds, fairies and small birds. Curved shapes, such as arcs, parabolas and semi-circles, are prevalent. Furniture from this era features dark red timbers. ART DECO This opulent style emerged from the 1920s until WWII. It was inspired by the Cubist movement in art. The style is streamlined and sleek in appearance. Geometric patterns including, sunbursts, zigzags and broad curves, are typical. Designers first used modern materials such as stainless steel, chrome and inlaid wood. Black leather and chrome furniture was very popular. SOME feel that decorating with pastels is too sugary- sweet. But executed well, pastels add a sophisticated atmosphere to a home. It pays to look at some of the historic styles that have gotten it right, such as early 20th-century Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Even up until the 1950s, pastels were popular, but these days designers seem to steer clear of them. Americans, however, do pastels well, and top-shelf hotels use a pastel palette as part of their stock-in-trade decorating style. Who would not want to wake up in a home that resembled a five-star boutique hotel? On the colour front, choose pastels with a dusty tone, such as peach, pearl and periwinkle. Wallpapers can provide a background of muted colour as well. Choose those that show patterns evoking the Deco era. The same goes for drapes: the longer, more volumin- ous and lustrous the better. Furnishings that suit this style include plush wool rugs, fine grained wooden writing desks and consoles, aged leather sofas and vel- vet wingbacks, high ceilings and fireplaces.
