VIVID (Vibrant Visions in De- sign) is Australia's longest run- ning design competition for new and emerging designers. In its 10th year, VIVID show- cased 100 innovative pieces by 50 designers at FURNITEX, co- located with Decoration + Design in Melbourne. Hardwick's Unfold Desk took out The Concept Award Winning prize. It is a laptop/tablet worksta- tion with a concealed desktop, opening to an expanded work- space with built-in speakers, cable management and storage. A combination of bamboo board, aluminium and mild steel were used in the construction. A STYLISH SELECTION Chris Vincent Lamp 103. Dusko Lapcevic Iris range. VIVID curator Uli Hasel said this year's selection featured some high quality, very refined and funky products with lots of colour. Many were made from recycled material. Three areas of focus included: Lighting emerged as the focus for submissions, with more than 20 lights and lamps entered. These included Edward Linacre's Weave Pendant, which was developed through the combination of tra- ditional craft processes and mod- ern CAD (computer aided design) techniques; Chris Vincent's LAMP 103 collection, a collection of elegant three-legged lamps in- spired by paper folding and sim- plicity; and Dusko Lapcevic's Iris Lighting range, a series of decorat- ive lights made from expanded mesh disks. Seating was a popular theme, with a diverse range of eco- friendly chairs and stools includ- ing, Shane Talbot's Skol Cups, developed through playing with leftover concrete and glazed cer- amic; Ash Allen's Skip Stool, an easy to disassemble stool made of salvaged Tasmanian oak dowel and recycled rubber tire crumb; and Talia Michelle Halls Pins Table Collection, made of recycled timber and cabriole legs. Fun and funky favourites in- cluded Jaz Woods bright Pixel Display Case (VIC), a quirky light- weight display case; Adam Lynch's Thim-ble Stools (VIC), multifunctional stools created with minimal material and mul- tiple functions in mind; and Lasa Brewer's Vega Mood Light (WA), brightly coloured handmade lights which can be scattered around any space.
