Plants & Processes Custom Engineered Components And the Flexo Press PBD Marries Peak Performance, lowest Possible costs By chuck Graziano and Joshua nard Shorter runs...Higher job counts...Faster turnaround... Minimal downtime between setups—In short, rapid changeovers and tighter production schedules on the flexo plant floor have fueled demand for high performance printing presses that enhance a firm’s competitive position in the global marketplace. Gone are the days of strategizing a 10-year return on a capital investment (ROI). Converters now need to break even in two-to-three years to begin evaluating the next technology investment. Custom engineered components, traditionally the purview of a single manufacturer, have morphed into integrat- ed engineering feature elements, manufactured by a cadre of press and press accessory makers in an attempt to marry peak performance to lowest possible cost. For example: one mid-sized, mid-western converter, Pack- aging By Design (PBD), based in Elgin, IL, has made a series EXPECTATIONS = QUALITY, ACCURACY, DEPENDABILITY • State-of-the art machinery allows for high quality graphics • Strict quality controls handle a customer’s packaging from design to delivery and assure everything will be done right the first time • Sleeve system cut setup time in half • Print samples pulled within 10 minutes, every job • Color deviation = < two Delta E • Makeready 30 percent to 40 percent faster; 10 decks registered within 100 ft. • Overall production speed enhanced 40 percent operators mastered the touch-screen interface on Packaging By Design’s new 10-color KYMc euroflex press in under one hour.
