Inside FABULOUS FABRIC LUSCIOUS LAWNS POWER TO SAVE TRANSFORM OLD TO NEW BRING IT BACK TO LIFE Janita Singh Painting your dining chairs can completely change a look. Picture: DULUX DIY TIPS Old furniture can be given a new lease of life with a coat of paint. If you have leftover paint from previous jobs around the house, put this to good use. Clean the furniture and either hand brush or spray paint. You will not believe the outcome. Some furniture may need a primer or undercoat. The right colour and texture of paint can completely transform its look, so invest in a good quality paint and brush that does not lose its bristles. Some furniture may need a couple of coats. Tape separate areas. For extra shine, use a clear topcoat. A dining table with chairs in different colours will completely change the look of your living space. Designers are also cleverly transforming furniture using wallpaper. DECORATING A DRIVE around your local area on a council pick-up day will show you how we like throwing out old furniture. Most items sitting by the roadside include broken chairs, old tables and used sofas -- all once expensive investments simply tossed away. While the global financial crisis has forced us to be frugal, we can still do better with items generally con- sidered broken and boring. Most times we have old furniture handed down in the family. It holds senti- mental value and, even though mostly outdated, we do not have the heart to get rid of it. So it often ends up in a hidden corner. Instead of sending old fur- niture to landfill or neglect- ing it, why not give it a deserving makeover. Upcycling furniture is huge- ly satisfying -- the whole process from sourcing a dat- ed and unloved piece that has seen better days to com- pletely transforming and giving it pride of place in a home is so rewarding. The keys to transforming old home furniture into new are preparation, creativity and hardwork.
