8 FLEXO FEBRUARY 2008 www.flexography.org This Month in FTA History... February 1960---FTA holds a two-day annual meeting---predecessor to the modern- day forum---Feb. 4-5 at Chicago's Palmer House. The theme: "Four Basic Steps to Quality Flexographic Printing... Through Better Preparation." In addition, The First Annual Report on FTA Activity was is- sued. One highlight: FTA's Education Committee is preparing a syllabus for use in graphic arts schools in major cities with flexo concentrations. Pilot course is set for New York School of Printing. 1960---Winners of the first-ever FTA Awards Competition are announced Feb. 5. Best of Show goes to Wolf Brothers for pictorial excellence in paper. First, or gold awards go to: Simplex Paper Box Corp.; Lassiter Corp.; International Paper; Topflight Corp; and Wraptune Inc. 1965---FTA announces that more than 7,000 people attended Saturday Workshops in the first five years of the program. First meeting of the sixth year is set for Mobile, AL on Feb. 13. 1967---FTA sets 11-event Saturday Workshop schedule, stretching from March through November and beginning in Philadelphia, PA. 1977---FTA survey indicates value of shipments of products printed flexograph- ically has reached $7 billion. Flexo's share of the printing and publishing market was estimated at 15 percent. Its share of the packaging market calculated out to 60 percent. More than 3,500 plants and 5,000 individuals in the U.S. and Canada were surveyed. 1981---FTA is appointed to act as trustee for Mark Andrews Sr. Scholarship Fund. It is to support one or more students who are pursuing a career in the graphic arts and more specifically, narrow-web flexography. 1983---Plans to produce FTA's 25th Anniversary Souvenir Journal are an- nounced. It is to be a fact book about the flexographic industry and its association. 1986---FFTA stages simultaneous nar- row web and wide web workshops, Feb. 22 at Dallas' Loews Anatole Hotel. 1989---FTA introduces Student Membership. Attendance at technical meetings is complimentary. Instructors must verify status on annual basis. Narrow Web and Wide Web Workshops are held Feb. 4 in Orlando, FL. An Operations Roundtable follows on the 16th in Philadelphia, PA. 1992---FFTA joins forces with Clemson University to jointly sponsor a three-day Process Color Symposium. It also sets a schedule of eight co-sponsored programs with Fox Valley Technical College, and five with Rochester Institute of Technology. Also, FFTA's Operations Roundtable opens in Charlotte, NC. First word of FTA's in- tentions to create a "Flex Tech" training series is conveyed in the pages of FLEXO. 1995-FTA announces plans to work with Asheville High School, Asheville, NC, and instructor Mike Davis in establishing the second Flexo in High School Program for the 1995-1996 school year. 1998---New Jersey's Bergen County Technical School enlists in FTA's Flexo in High School program. Plans to hold the first FTA Design Awards Competition are announced. 2002---FFTA and B2B Portales an- nounce agreement to present FLEXO Español in the pages of Conversion---in both print and web format. The move increases FLEXO Español's frequency and speeds delivery to Latin American flexographers. 2005---FTA announces that it has started work on the association's first- ever Flexible Packaging Market Study. Trends, market opportunities, barriers to entry, production data and end-user direc- tives are analyzed. Publication is set for Summer. 2006---FFTA announces theme for Fall Prepress Conference: "Prepress in Comparison: Focus North America and Europe." It is to be an exploration of similarities and differences in the areas of plate technologies, client/vendor relation- ships and flexo market shares. FTA TODAY
