Every new technology investment should include JDF capabilities, even if it's likely to take some time to get to grips with the workflow changes they need to make. At drupa 2004, a lot of hype surrounded the JDF bandwagon, much of which has fortunately died down. That doesn't neces- sarily mean that JDF has lost momentum, but it is definitely on a changed course. Instead of moving at high speed to reach its des- tination, JDF is now wending its way throughout the market land- scape. It's not always highly visible, but it is getting into more and more printing and publishing companies. Business development and process evolution will see JDF implementations spreading, as business owners start to realize its benefits. With innovative technologies, it is often the case that people prefer to observe from a distance before taking the plunge them- selves. History is littered with such instances. The tin can was invented in 1813 and a hammer was required to open early ver- sions, because the metal used was so thick. By 1838 when the tin opener entered the scene, people had sufficient knowledge of the technology to welcome the tin can and the tin opener as vital improvements in food science. So it is with digital workflows and JDF: it takes time for a market to trust new processes and em- brace revolutionary technologies, but eventually they do. CIP4 & NPG CONVERGE The International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organiza- tion and the Networked Graphic Production (NGP) Partners have announced that the two entities have reached an agreement under which the functions of NGP will merge into CIP4. All members of NGP are already members of CIP4. From here on, NGP operations will be assumed by CIP4 during a transition period between the present and drupa 2008. Activities of NGP will take place through a new working group of CIP4 dubbed the Business Networking Group, which will focus on integration through cooperation.
