FLEXO Magazine : February 2008
If you're like me, as time goes on, you seem to lose track of where you are today in rela- tion to where you've been throughout your life; as well as what lies in front of you in your business and personal worlds. How many times have you caught yourself talking to someone about how old an associate is, or how long he/ she has worked at a particular company...and you've been more than 10 years off? As the old adage goes, "time flies" and it seems to be traveling at warp speed these days! Having spent close to half of the 50 years that FTA has been in existence serving the or- ganization and flexo industry in one capacity or another (it was 23 years in November of last year), I, like many, have witnessed a real transformation in the level of industry leadership that this Association has afforded to a multitude of companies and, more importantly, the people that benefit directly from the variety of services offered. The goals and objectives that people look to FTA to achieve do change year-to-year and generation-to-generation, but the overall mission of the organization is something that remains constant: Develop and communicate high-quality technical information to all segments of the flexographic printing/converting industry encompassing standards, research, awards, education, and training initiatives. Even a bit more "out there" on the horizon, so to speak, is the organizational vision that allows us to conceptualize what it is FTA strives to achieve in a perfect world: To be the recognized definitive source for information that contributes to continuous and significant improvements in the flexographic printing/converting industry. Everywhere you look in the packaging graphics marketplace today, a large part of the success that flexo has realized in the way of print quality, production efficiency, productivity and so- phistication, I'd like to think can be attributed to a very strong technical organization like FTA. Taking it a step further, the global strength of the flexo technology and business commu- nity is a testament to the solid network of international FTA-affiliated organizations serving their respective constituencies. Every four years, as the graphics world comes together at drupa, the goliath multinational trade fair, the flexo world gets a little smaller, as the leader- ship and membership from the 19 international FTA's cohabitate at and cross-pollinate in a common show stand. Our strategic planning leadership councils have tasked FTA's leader- ship with working closer with the global flexo community in order to share innovation and shorten the learning curve with respect to developing new technology. DON'T MISS THE FORUM ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION What would one of my columns be without a shameless plug? Here goes...one of FTA's strongest value propositions to its membership over the past 50 years is the Annual Forum & INFO*FLEX Exhibition. This venue is a unique educational, networking and business en- hancement opportunity that continues to receive excellent feedback from longtime industry veterans, as well as from those looking to reap the benefits of participating in such interaction. In commemoration of FTA's golden anniversary, there are a number of special celebra- tions and value-added experiences planned throughout this year's three-day event that are sure to make the Forum experience not only enjoyable, but rewarding as well--for attend- ees and their companies. If you make the trip to Dallas, I strongly urge you to maximize your investment and fully participate in all aspects of the event...attend the sessions, visit the exhibitors at INFO*FLEX, network at the various social gatherings and, in general, en- hance your knowledge base! Although, flexo technology in all areas is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was in 1958, many of the same issues and challenges are confronted on a daily basis involving profit- ability & efficiency, people & training, evaluating & investing in new technology. Therein lies the value of the Annual Forum and INFO*FLEX Exhibition. As long as the flexo technology keeps advancing, the people involved keep changing and the market dynamics keep evolving, there will be a need for these types of events...and for another 50 years of FTA making flexo stronger! 66 FLEXO FEBRUARY 2008 www.flexography.org Calendar FEB. 2008 20-22 Broadview, IL FFTA/Ditrolio Flexographic Institute, Advanced Flexo Seminar MARCH 2008 4-6 Rochester, NY FFTA/Rochester Institute of Technology Co-sponsored Basic Flexo Seminar 10-12 Indianapolis, IN NEHS---National Environmental Health and Safety Conference 12-14 Broadview, IL FFTA/Ditrolio Flexographic Institute Basic Flexo Seminar 25 Baltimore, MD FFTA Regional Workshop, APRIL 2008 2-4 Clemson, SC FFTA/Clemson University Flexographic Process Color Printing Symposium 27-30 Dallas, TX FFTA Annual Forum Hilton Anatole Hotel 28-29 Dallas, TX INFO*FLEX 2008 Exhibition Trinity Hall, Hilton Anatole Hotel MAY 2008 15-16 Clemson, SC FFTA/Clemson University Digital Proofing for Flexography 19-11 June Dusseldorf, Germany drupa JUNE 2008 3-5 Rochester, NY FFTA/Rochester Institute of Technology, Co-sponsored Color Management Seminar 17-19 Rochester, NY FFTA/Rochester Institute of Technology Co-sponsored Basic Flexo Seminar AUG. 2008 5-7 Rochester, NY FFTA/Rochester Institute of Technology, Co-sponsored Color Management Seminar FTA TODAY 50 Years of Making Flexo Stronger So much more than a Catch-phrase!
