FLEXO Magazine : September 2012
EARL: We are working on FIRST certification now. FLEXO: How to you assess and enhance the skills of your pressroom personnel? EARL: We have our vendors come in on a regular basis and do seminars on new products. We constantly move people around, so they learn and become familiar with all aspects of the flexographic print production process. FLEXO: Can you provide a brief statement on how sustain- ability, or green printing; smart, interactive labels and QR codes; combination/multi-process printing; digital printing as a complementary technology to flexo; and expanded color gamut printing are impacting your plant; and what likely ef- fects they ’ll have on operations in the years to come: EARL: Sustainability, or green printing certification is some- thing that at Overnight Labels, we are currently working on attaining. In our plant, we’ve been running combo printing for years. Digital printing as a complementary technology to flexo is something that we’re thinking about. ECG printing is scheduled for roll-out and implementation, once we are fully functional with our new HD Flexo system FLEXO: Can you please explain the value of FTA mem- bership to your firm and comment on the most significant takeaways from the association’s recent meetings, training programs or printed educational materials? EARL: FTA’s seminars, Forum and Fall Conference sessions are good, but they tend to re-iterate what I have already read in FLEXO Magazine. However, FLEXO magazine is an excel- lent source of knowledge and helps keep me current on new technology. We have just started implementing FIRST training, so I don’t have an opinion yet. Ask me next year. FLEXO: Finally, if you have capital improvement plans under development/implementation, what are they and how will they change the face of your business as we move into the future? EARL: We are continuing to invest in our company at the same pace as we would if the economic climate was not so toxic. I am trying to be optimistic. Actual products, printed by Overnight Labels. www.flexography.org september 2012 FLEXO 39
