FLEXO Magazine : September 2012
us a much better shop. We’d rather have jobs recorded, so we could look back at them and repeat them and capitalize on predictability and consistency. We believe in FIRST. FLEXO: What color management and control applications/ procedures do you employ in an effort to maintain design and brand color integrity? WISE: Our color management system, as well as our utiliza- tion of FIRST, records and documents everything, making things faster and more accurate. FLEXO: Do LEAN manufacturing principles (cost-effective manufacturing) have a place in your plant? Why/why not? WISE: We like the LEAN idea, but haven’t formally embraced it. We are literally too busy to implement it; no matter how important or viable it may be—yet. FLEXO: Have you moved, or do you intend to move to a completely automated workflow? How will that enhance your firm’s competitive position? WISE: Yes. At Century Label, we have tried to automate as much as we can. We manage inventories and schedules through our MIS system everywhere: press side, warehouse, shipping/receiving. That’s only part of the story. We’re now intent on tying in graphic workflows. We will get there, once we get to digital printing. It’s inevitable. And, it ’s a waste if we don’t pursue that integration. We have to enhance our competitive position and utilize any/all tools that lower costs and speed delivery. FLEXO: What other steps are you taking to maintain a path toward continuous improvement in your plant? WISE: Again, nothing formal. We constantly review, meet and talk about how we can better speed things up. It’s a long process. But it is on our agenda. FLEXO: Have you attained FIRST, ISO, ANSI, or environmentally related certifications? Do you expect to in the future? How do you assess and enhance the skills of your pressroom personnel? WISE: We have gone through a lot of changes: consolidated a couple plants, moved to a new location, etc. When we did that, a lot of things went hand-in-hand. We started looking at and planning to enhance the skills of our pressroom personnel. A few guys have gone off to FIRST Seminars (past FTA con- ferences). But participation in FIRST Operator Certification programs is on the agenda!
