FLEXO Magazine : September 2012
FLEXO: What technical advancements have simplified the flexographic process in recent years? How have they served to reduce waste, enhance efficiency, improve time to market and alleviate other challenges? PAQUETTE: Digital plateaking has changed the face of the Artcraft Label pressroom. It’s expanded capabilities, en- hanced quality and impressed customers. FLEXO: How is your firm embracing the industry ’s push toward standardization? Are you optimizing the production process and moving out to print to the numbers/specifications? PAQUETTE: Standardization is extremely important. Artcraft will be investing this year in a completely new enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship manage- ment (CRM) system that will help streamline the operation to a horizontal level. Thanks to Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST) training, we are printing to the numbers and achieving consistent, repeatable results. FLEXO: What color management and control applications/ procedures do you employ in an effort to maintain design and brand color integrity? PAQUETTE: Present tools include both hardware and soft- ware from Esko Artwork. FLEXO: Do LEAN manufacturing principles have a place in your plant? Why/why not? PAQUETTE: LEAN manufacturing is embraced at Artcraft Label. We are in the full implementation phase right now and see a potential for substantial operations savings. FLEXO: Have you moved, or do you intend to move to a completely automated workflow? How will that enhance your firm’s competitive position? PAQUETTE: Yes. We figure we will be apt to respond much faster to customer demands and be more efficient than our competitors on all aspects of operations. FLEXO: What other steps are you taking to maintain a path toward continuous improvement in your plant? PAQUETTE: LEAN implementation. FLEXO: Have you attained FIRST, ISO, ANSI, or environmen- tally related certifications? Do you expect to in the future? PAQUETTE: Artcraft is ISO certified and the majority of our staff have FIRST training, including myself, the company president. FLEXO: How do you assess and enhance the skills of your pressroom personnel? PAQUETTE: It will be fully determined by LEAN. We currently do personal performance evaluations, and are working to fully integrate LEAN principles into the assessments. FLEXO: Can you provide a brief statement on how the fol- lowing developments are impacting your plant and what likely effects they ’ll have on operations in the years to come: sustainability or green printing; smart, interactive labels and QR codes; combination/multi-process printing; digital printing as a complementary technology to flexo; and expanded color gamut printing? PAQUETTE: Sustainability, or green printing, has important main objectives that we embrace at Artcraft Label; namely, reducing waste, minimizing energy usage and minimizing consumable consumption. Production of smart, interactive labels and QR codes are already counted among our capa- bilities. We’re integrating combination/multi-process printing and increasing our use of digital printing as a complementary technology to flexo. Plans are being formulated to introduce expanded color gamut printing to the plant. FLEXO: Can you please explain the value of FTA mem- bership to your firm and comment on the most significant takeaways from the association’s recent meetings, training programs or printed educational materials? PAQUETTE: FTA membership is extremely important. The association is strong and provides valuable training tools that no other types of associations do. FLEXO: Finally, if you have capital improvement plans under development/implementation, what are they and how will they change the face of your business as we move into the future? PAQUETTE: Automating our workflow, fully embracing LEAN principles, expanding our multi-process printing capabilities and moving into expanded color gamut printing will change the Artcraft Label operation dramatically, as it will give the firm the ability to become even more nimble and flexible. n Inspection of finished work is a constant at Artcraft label. www.flexography.org september 2012 FLEXO 63
