FLEXO Magazine : September 2012
With flexible packaging downgauging and new environ- mentally friendly materials for a more holistic packaging/la- bel offering, a look at a different flexo approach is necessary. Holistic packaging with the constant development of new ma- terials will continually change the way packaging and labels are delivered. It is then reasonable to consider new presses that can be configured and later re-configured according to the changing market demands. Today ’s label sector is poised to look at other label solu- tions or related products to generate new business. The focus is value added returns in order to serve existing customers or expand market reach. The question remains: “Why is it that many narrow web converters have tried to enter these markets using the con- ventional narrow web in-line press?” The argument made by some converters is that they must have a press that will serve many different markets. It must be versatile enough to justify the cost over a wide range of products. A hybrid, combination press, can produce all types of labels in addition to shrink sleeves and flexible packaging. Can these narrow web converters really expand into the shrink sleeve, stretch sleeve and short run flexible packaging markets profitably with a press designed to do everything? Let’s explore the possibilities with an eye on current trends.
