INTERIOR DECORATING BIG STRIPES REAPPEAR THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Janita Singh Writing is on the wall: bold stripes are back, as can be seen above, and at left. STRIPES are back. This trend, last seen in the 1960s and 1970s, is popular with people who have a bold outlook towards life. Stripes can be intelligently ad- ded to any home decor to suit any need, taste and mood. Adding stripey features to your home decor can add an exotic touch and make a style statement. But beware -- stripes need to be used with great care. Planning and placement are key. Options are endless. You could paint stripes on walls, create stri- ped seating arrangements on cu- shions; or choose striped rugs, drapes and decoration pieces. Stripes can work as verticals and horizontals, thick or thin. In case of smaller spaces, thick stripes add to the volume of the room -- while thin stripes make the ceiling appear higher than it is. Then there are options which can be created by using colour -- bold or light, contrasting or a combination in between. Inspirations Colour Consultant Andrea Long suggests painting horizontal stripes on a feature wall with a combination of three tonal changes to make the room appear longer. She says candy stripes, which are a combination of lolly-pink tones, are a hot trend right now. ''Subtle vertical stripes and bold horizontal stripes when teamed with the latest finishes achieve a contemporary look,'' she says. LINING UP SOME SOPHISTICATION HERE is how to add sophistication to a room by painting stripes. Apply a base coat of paint, usually the lightest of your stripe colours, to clean walls. Determine width of stripes. Attach strips of coloured paper to where you think the stripe should be and add a piece of furniture for perspective. Now that you know where the stripes will be, mark them with a pencil. Use a spirit level to ensure stripes are straight. Apply painter's tape just out- side of each penciled line so that the painted stripe will cover over the pencil line. Using a trim brush, paint over part of the tape and stripe area to ensure a sharp edge. Fill inside.
