TRENDS BE COOL, HIP AND RETRO FIND 70s GEAR HERE IN SYDNEY Susan Redman 1970s home decor brought bright colours and mixed prints into many homes. IT IS easy to become blase about some of the things others travel so fartoseewhenitisattheendof your street. I live close to one of Sydney's best flea markets, yet I complain every weekend as I walk through it sipping my takeaway coffee: ''Nah -- not so good today.'' Butitisgood--Ispyplentyof stylistas each week, who I know don't live in the area, happily picking through the gems buried in trash and treasure boxes. They are no doubt 'style-hunting' a cool Seventies heirloom -- the hot trend right now -- but it leaves me cold. Perhaps I just have to admit I've lost interest or even lost the picker's knack to spot a good find at 50 paces. But the truth is that my current disinterest is because I grew up in a 1970s house with too many geometric prints, too much orange and olive, and too much polyester, chenille and boucle. Argh! The thought of it gets me a little crazy -- just like our patio paving and the seasickening mo- tion of our canopied swing lounge. Clearly I need to look at these items afresh, find some loving memories, preferably tinged rosey-coloured, and ask myself what's so good about late mid-century? Well, firstly the colour-combos are spectacular. Where else can you find hot pink teamed with puce green and sunburnt tan? And then there are the shapes: The curves of chairs and low-slung seating; the tapered legs of cou- ches and dining tables that seem so prone to breakage, but don't. And what about the light fit- tings? Who could not adore the oversized cylindrical lampshades on thin wooden stands that were once the sole mood-lighting fix- tures of every 1970s living room? And did I mention prints? Charming to be sure. Even the simplified geometrics of brown and tan fruit motifs splashed across cushions covers, shower curtains and bedspreads are undeniably modernist. Yes, now I think about it, there's lots to love about vintage right now -- especially the 1970s stuff ... I can't wait until the weekend.
