OUTDOORS GOING WITH THE GRAIN TIMBER DECKS ADD WARMTH Janita Singh Decks can add charm and value to your home. They can also significantly increase the usable living space on your property. GO NATIVE Sydney Flooring says native Australian timbers are an excellent choice for decking because they are perfectly suited to our climate. Species such as blackbutt and spotted gum also have fire-resisting properties making them ideal for bushfire prone areas. INSTALLING or updating an al- fresco living area can enhance your lifestyle and improve the value of your home. The most cost-effective and sim- ple way to liven up your outdoor living area is with a deck and with warmer days ahead, homeowners will appreciate this feature. Decks can be anything from simple extensions to expensive additions --- it is all about how much time you want to spend outdoors and your budget. Built for privacy or perform- ance, the variety of deck designs is only limited by your imagination --- loft, platform, levelled, multi- level, pool or spa wraps, outdoor entertainment, island or as a stand-alone feature. Budget, repair and maintenance plays a big role. Decking materials are varied. Composite wood prod- ucts take less maintenance than natural wood. With a natural wood deck you will need to stain and seal it every year. Another thing to consider is the life span of different deck ma- terials. Wooden deck planks are susceptible to cracking and splin- tering, water damage and rot if not properly maintained. Hardwood decking is a favourite in Aust- ralia. Boral Timber says hard- wood needs regular maintenance to retain its colour and appeal. Apply a quality finish or stain to preserve the colour as well as improve the deck's life span. Keep the deck clean to prevent the build-up of dried leaves and debris and get rid of puddles of water sitting on the surface. Regular cleaning will help pre- vent spotting caused. If the deck turns grey from weathering, a solution of oxalic acid crystals mixed with water will help restore it. Inspect the deck every few months to see if any nails are sticking out or if there are any loose and rotting boards. MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT DECKS need to be planned and require maintenance and spring is a good time to get started. Here is a simple staining guide with the help of SHUR-LINE. Prepare the surface --- Look for any surface problems, such as erod- ed, rotting or decayed boards, or loose nails and replace them. Sand any cracked or splintered boards and railings then scrub the deck thoroughly with a stiff bristle brush and a deck cleaner. Rinse with water. Leave dry for few days. Mask and cover --- Tape off any areas where the stain is not desired. Start staining --- Start by stain- ing trim work, including railings and spindles, then stain the deck using a reliable stain with brush or stain pad with groove tool.
