ECO-LESSONS KIDS WILL DIG HOLIDAY PROJECTS FUN IDEAS Janita Singh Enjoy some quality time in the garden these school holidays. WORM FARMING Children love worms so creating a worm bin or farm for composting your kitchen scraps is a great school holiday idea. Get foam boxes with lids from your green-grocer. Make holes in the bottom of one box to let liquid drain. Place box with the holes over another box without holes. Tear up leaves, newspaper and cardboard to make a layer of bedding. Compost can also be used. Soak bedding before adding to box. Add two handfuls of composting worms. Worms can double their population in three months Add food waste to the top of the bedding regularly in small amounts. Cover the worm bed with newspaper or a piece of hessian. This will help keep a constant temperature. Place the lid of the box on the top. Place the worm farm in a cool and shady spot. Add water to the box whenever it gets dry. It should be the consistency of a damp sponge. COMBINE fun and learning for children by working on eco-friendly school holiday projects. A sustainable garden is a great place to start and Bunnings Gardencare buyer Ashley Hazelwood said teaching children about sustainable living was an effective way to learn eco-friendly habits. ''It's a healthy way to let kids have fun over the hol- idays while keeping them off the couch and com- puter,'' he says. Make gardening fun for children by letting them create their own little garden project. An easy project to start with is a worm farm or why not use a plastic trough, soil and seeds to create a mini herb, vegetable or flower garden. Organise the back yard so the kids have their own area in which to work. Bunnings will run free school holiday DIY workshops, designed specifically for kids.
