SMART SHOPPING HOME TIPS ON THE NET BLOGGERS ARE CREATING INSPIRATION The blog site abeachcottage.com gives tips on giving homes a coastal style. Laura Trieste THE internet has become a haven for those looking to up- date their home. Not only to buy furniture and appliances from, but as a source of tips, advice and information. Fiona Gaven offers all of this in her blog lilyfieldlife.com, where she sells old furniture she has painted and renewed. This hobby began when friends encouraged the Lilyfield resident to sell her work after she reupholstered a child's chair to look like a French chair for her friend's daughter. ''I thought I would like to share my creative endeavours with others so signed up to Blogger and never looked back,'' Ms Gaven says. ''I truly believe most people can DIY if they only gave it a go, so one of the aims is to inspire others and impart knowledge.'' Ms Gaven says blogging is increasingly becoming the way to go to get home tips. ''I think more and more peo- ple are turning to blogs for their daily dose of home/interior de- sign inspiration and advice,'' she says. The abeachcottage.com blog has also risen in popularity, repeatedly making it into the Top Australian Blogger lists. FIONA'S TIPS RESTORING or refurbishing old furniture is a handy skill, says Fiona Gaven. Her tips: Choose a piece according to your ability and time you're willing to spend on it. Cleaning is the first step to make the job easier. Wipe with damp cloth. Do not overwet wooden furniture. Fill cracks or holes with wood filler and sand smooth. Remove all hardware for easier painting. Sand piece lightly so paint has something to adhere to. Use good quality paint brush Prime the piece. This is im- portant with old wooden furni- ture that can bleed though paint. Turn chairs and intricate pieces upside down and paint hard-to-reach places first. If you have used acrylic paint, use a protective top-coat. Choices are a polyurethane, a sealer or furniture wax. For a shabby chic look, lightly distress the piece where high use would happen naturally (edges and near handles). • FREE Measure & Quote • 10 Years Guarantee Shop 1 14 Cammeray Road, Cammeray Showroom Open 6 Days www.designarobe.com.au BUILDING LIC NO 204289C 9908 5503 2220426 26/6 WARDROBES $ON T PAY RETAIL BUY DIRECT m!S SEEN IN (OME "EAUTIFULn COMPARE OUR PRICES!
