correct optimization, it is now possible to overcome the tradi- tional limitations of process color inconsistencies, insufficient ink transfer, poor registration and restricted color gamut. SOFTWARE SOLUTION With this in mind, a unique software solution has been developed to make it practical for flexo production profes- sionals. This software can reduce the need for spot color inks and make greater use of standard four color process print- ing---without sacrificing the image quality or print consistency of the final product. Engineered specifically for the flexo print process, and intended to be usable by a non-color specialist, the software has been designed to characterize a specific flexographic print condition---this includes the unique highlight charac- teristics of flexo printing---and then generate predictable, achievable recipes for accurate spot color replacement. The cost effective solution comprises the software package and an industry standard color measurement device. Going further, the system employs unique color targets and algo- rithms to capture the color gamut and predict the accuracy with which a spot color can be rendered as a process build; only selecting recipes that are practically printable on press. By not only generating the recipe required, but also provid- ing accurate prediction of the final result, the solution allows print production professionals to have realistic conversations with print buyers and build confidence in a path forward for spot color replacement. By utilizing this unique software solution, it is possible to build and manage spot color recipes for many different press conditions allowing both printers and prepress providers to meet the wide-ranging needs of their clients. Solution features include the capability to: • Define and characterize print conditions for specific ink sets, presses and substrates • Build recipes to create spot colors from standard color libraries or custom client libraries • Set user specific limits for acceptable delta E tolerances from target L*a*b* values and view the results with simple "traffic light" indicators • Validate recipe accuracy with machine-readable charts and create individual color swatch books to facilitate cli- ent conversations • Integrate recipe implementation seamlessly within a pro- duction workflow or utilize the recipes further upstream in the creative cycle In addition, the resultant color model can be used to easily generate ICC separation profiles, and ICC profiles or Device Links for proofing, enabling the user to not only proof the accuracy of spot color representation, but also accurately represent the tonal reproduction possible with that specific flexographic print condition.
