For more information about Kodak Packaging Solutions visit: kodak.com/go/packaging providing clients with a service that not only offers improved turnaround times, but also provides them with a significant tool to drive toward demanding packaging reduction targets. The software solution provides an innovational approach that capitalizes on other technological advancements, specifi- cally the characteristics of the latest generation digital flexo plate technology, harnesses the benefits they offer and turns them into tangible, practical production processes. TECHNICAL SIGNIFICANCE This workflow can be employed as a powerful tool to drive toward challenging packaging reduction targets, reducing overall packaging costs and improving sustainability without compromising quality. If special colors are reduced, not only can some of these particular issues be alleviated, but also, the increased use of a standard color palette (in this case CMYK) opens the door for multiple designs to be co-printed on the same web-dramatically increasing efficiency and reducing pro- duction costs. The workflow changes the preconceived ideas about the way in which spot colors need to be used in flexographic printing. It has the power to change, in a number of carefully calculated steps, the entire production workflow. 1. Upon initial implementation it provides opportunity to consider existing designs and optimize production to remove spot colors where possible 2. A second stage is the opportunity to combine designs across a web where possible to take advantage of the additional time and cost savings 3. A final step is to actually design for a fixed color palette, taking maximum advantage of the achievable color space and ensuring the most efficient, lowest cost and sustainable package print production The significance of achieving these steps with a four-color pro- cess workflow (rather than ECG) cannot be underestimated. n About the Author: Paul Lancelle serves as senior business development manager-Packaging Technical Applications with Eastman Kodak. Flexo is new leading-edge technology that makes it possible to get optimum color reproduction and density information for any spot color, right at your fingertips. Using Predictive Analysis, the software provides optimal ink density information to reproduce a color match to a reference color. Predictive Analysis compares the spectral data of the reference color to the spectral data of the color measured on press and calculates the optimal ink density to achieve the best color match (lowest ∆E). SpotOn! Flexo’s Predictive Analysis capabilities have proven to save time and money by giving the press operator insightful information they currently do not have, allowing them to better diagnose and correct spot color matching issues.
