Visit www.flexography.org Since its inception more than 50 years ago, this awards competition has reflected the tremendous technological growth and achievement of the flexographic industry. Flexographic printers/converters, print buy- ers, suppliers, designers and students world- wide are invited to take part in this competi- tion, regardless of FTA membership status. Submit your entries today! objective: To recognize outstanding technical achievement in flexographic printing. Technical achievement is defined as exceptional printing that has an extremely high degree of difficulty or complexity. Also considered is the use of techniques, processes, controls, materi- als, tooling, or equipment that is outside the norm and contributes to the advancement of the industry. Deadlines: All entries must be received by Friday, January 11, 2013. Eligibility: The competition is open to all flexographic printers/ converters, print buyers, and qualified graphic arts schools regardless of membership status. Entries: • May also be submitted by supplier companies on behalf of a printer or designer with their approval. (Other than Self-promotion) • May be submitted by designers directly. • Must have the customer’s (print buyer’s) approval. • Must have been flexographically printed; if only a portion of the entry is flexographically printed please identify what part of the entry is flexo and what is not on the Technical Data Form in the Additional Technical Information space. • Must have been produced for a production run of an actual market product. • Are not eligible if they are products from tests, sample runs, and mock-ups with the exception of student and self-promotion entries. • Must have been produced between January 1 and December 31, 2012. Entry Classifications: Wide Web: Entries produced on presses having a width greater than 44”. Mid Web: Entries produced on presses having a width greater than 24” up to and including 44”. Narrow Web: Entries produced on presses having a width of 24” or less. Paperboard: Entries on paperboard converted by fold- ing, cutting and scoring into a folded carton, and spe- cialty items such as signage, posters, paper plates or paper cups. Napkins: Entries printed on tissue-like paper folded and cut in-line (typical of party goods & specialty design products) Combined Corrugated: Entries printed directly on sheet- fed combined board (all flutes, combinations, and liner weights) • In-line or off-line die-cutting (any number of print stations) • In-line rotary-die-cutting (four print stations or less) Preprinted Linerboard: Entries printed directly on web- fed linerboard before being converted into corrugated board. Envelope: Entries printed both on- and off-line on envelopes of any kind. Publications/Newspaper: Entries of newspapers, book- lets, directories, catalogs, inserts, and magazines printed web- or sheet-fed. Self-promotion (open to printers only): Entries printed by companies in-house to promote their printing capa- bilities, which may include references to specific sup- pliers’ products. Student: Entries from students enrolled in a recognized technical, vocational or graphic arts institution. All entries must be produced and printed by students. Categories: Please read carefully! Primary Print Categories: Line: Printing consisting predominantly of solids and lines [can contain some screen or process elements (less than 10%), but will remain as a line item and will be judged accordingly]. Screen: Printing consisting predominantly of continu- ous tone screen tints, vignettes, halftones, and duo- tones using any set of ink colors. Screen entries may also include line printing and/or process printing (less than 10%), but will remain as a screen item and will be judged accordingly. Process: Printing consisting predominately of three or more colors in the reproduction of an image. The result appears as a “full color” image obtained by the overlapping of various size dots to simulate changes in density and hue of color that give the final appear- ance of a full color spectrum. Many of these entries may include line and screen elements. *ALL PROCESS ENTRIES SHOULD INCLUDE A COLOR CONTRACT PROOF. Points are awarded for the inclusion of the contract proof (target) and the point amount is based upon the quality (closeness) of the match. *Added difficulty. 2013 Fta Excellence in Flexography awards Competition all entry forms are available as interactive, fillable PDFs. Visit www.flexography.org substrate Categories for the web entry classifications: Film Metallized Substrate: Printing must be directly on the metallized surface of the substrate, otherwise the entry should be submitted in film or paper. Coated Paper: Up to 0.012” thick. Uncoated Paper: Up to 0.012” thick. Towel/Tissue Entry requirements: To be accepted for judging your entry must include: • A completed Entry Form. • An accurately completed Technical Data Form for each entry. • All applicable entry fees. • Proper number of print samples. • Web printed samples, in roll form, must have four (4) sequential, continuous FULL WEB WIDTH 360-degree revolutions of the print cylinder. Samples may be submitted in sheeted singles only if the roll form is not possible [example: for a 2 across/ 2 around job 16 sheets need to be submitted]. A statement MUST accompany the submission explaining why the roll form is not possible. If the proper number of impressions or the full web width is not submitted, the entry may be judged, but in all likelihood will NOT be considered for an award. • Envelope, four (4) consecutive finished & four (4) consecutive unfinished. If available please submit roll-to-roll 4-cylinder repeats of the web. • Paperboard, Combined Corrugated and Napkin entries must submit a minimum of four (4) prefer- ably consecutive revolutions. • Publications/Newspaper entries must include four (4) copies of the entry. Select the correct category for the entry. If you have a question on the proper category, refer to the definitions of “line,” “screen,” and “process” in the categories section. Judging line and/or screen and/or process is at the discretion of the Awards Committee. important notes: If an entry fails to meet any of the requirements, the ineligible entry will not be returned and the entry fee will not be refunded. Each entry requires its own Technical Data Form. Photocopy or print additional forms as needed. STEP 1. ENTER NAME. Please be sure to give each entry a distinct, descriptive title, as this is the name of the entry that will be used in the awards presentation and the awards recap issue of FLEXO Magazine. STEP 2. ENTER CODE. The Category Code refers to the entry classification, print category, and substrate cat- egory. Example: A.1.a indicates wide web, line, and film. Please carefully select the correct category code for each entry and enter it in AWARDS CATEGORY box. See the Print Category Codes page for a complete list. STEP 3. Next, complete the technical data for each entry by checking off the appropriate boxes and fill- ing in the blanks. Be sure to provide all information requested as incomplete or inaccurate Technical Data Forms may result in disqualification. REMEMBER: Four (4) sequential, continuous, full web width, 360-degree revolutions of your print samples should be included. If you are unable to provide the required number of samples (i.e . repeats), you must provide an explanation of why the entry cannot meet this requirement. IF THE PROPER NUMBER OF REPEATS AND FULL WEB WIDTH ARE NOT SUPPLIED AND AN EXPLANATION IS NOT PROVIDED, THE ENTRY WILL BE JUDGED BUT IN ALL LIKELIHOOD WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR AN AWARD.
