GETTING YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER BE SMART AND PLAN AHEAD Janita Singh IMAGINATION Christmas decorating can be as simple or as elaborate as your imagination. Pick a colour theme for your home and work out a budget. Gardens are great sources of inspiration. Get simple twigs from your backyard, add a little spray paint, ideally in silver, red or gold, place in a vase for an entryway or dining room table decoration. Turn last year's Christmas cards into works of art. Think natural --- evergreen branches, pine cones and berries add interest to any table setting. Add ribbons in festive colours to cushions and chairs. Make your own holiday wreaths by using things from your garden. Blooming creepers can be easily shaped. Place a few potplants in front of the house. CHRISTMAS PREPARATION CHRISTMAS is in the air, bringing with it many chal- lenges. As much as this is a merry time of the year, all shopping for gifts, buying for the house and planning feasts and festivities can be stressful. Getting the house ready for guests can also add to the pressure. So plan ahead. Make a list of things you need to do, work out a budget and check your local shops and supermarkets for inspiration. First stop -- look at your house. It's the perfect oppor- tunity to get things in order. Replace and revamp everything you have neglec- ted throughout the year -- cracked windows, over- grown gardens, choked-up gutters and peeling paint. This is also a good excuse to invest in some new furni- ture or change those old curtains and blinds. Add cushions, rugs and throws in festive colours and you're ready for fun. For those brave enough to go all the way, change the paint scheme of your house. Decorations play a big role in creating that festive feel. Keep in mind, not everything has to be new. Make your guests feel right at home by giving them enough space. Look at your house and what it can offer if guests are staying overnight. Make sure you provide adequate seating. Christmas lunch doesn't mean everyone has to sit down at one table. Add seating arrangements all over the house There is no point adding things if your house is al- ready crowded. Throw out anything not needed, or pack and store away items from the past few seasons. Seen any great ideas?
