GARDENING BREAKING THE RULES NEW BOOK TO HELP YOU IN THE GARDEN Millie Ross has published a book full of creative tips for gardening. Janita Singh IS your garden a little on the ordinary side and in need of a fun makeover? The Thrifty Gardener, by hor- ticulturist Millie Ross, is packed with quirky and alternative garden projects, including native bee-houses, outdoor showers, edible cubby houses and bedspring frames for climbers, all made from re- purposed materials. Ms Ross is a designer, radio broadcaster, columnist with Gardening Australia magazine and senior researcher for ABC TV's Gardening Australia. An innovative gardener, she has an unconventional ap- proach and a commitment to make gardening accessible to everyone. ''Getting into the garden can connect you with more than the plants around you. This book is about igniting the skills and knowledge you already have but may not realise,'' she says. ''This is your garden, so please don't be restricted by rules. Each and every plot should be influenced and in- spired by its own unique com- bination of characteristics. ''There is no right or wrong way,'' she says. POT PLANTS TOASTING INGENUITY CONTAINER gardening is great for renters or those starting out with bad soil. ''Much of my garden is regularly on the move, so the most treasured plants in my collection are all growing in containers,'' says The Thrifty Gardener author Millie Ross. ''My theory is that any- thing that can hold soil can grow a plant. If you want something different or are on a budget, make it yourself. Old rubbish bins, polysty- rene boxes and woks are easily converted,'' she said. How to make toaster pots ''All you need for this project is an old toaster, rust-proof primer, soil and plants. Cut off the power cord. Seal the outside with a clear rustproof primer and let it dry before potting. Fill toaster halfway with potting mix, and then tap it to settle into the cracks. ''Plants can get stressed when fitted into tight spots but healed cuttings of succu- lents will slip right in and quickly develop roots. If you use potted plants, buy them small and use liquid seaweed. Mulch and water regularly!''
