BARBECUES BRING HOME A BARBECUE BUY A BURNER RIGHT FOR YOU Janita Singh A survey has revealed that Australians like to entertain with a barbecue in summer at least three times a week. BUYING THE RIGHT MODEL Size is important. Consider size and how many people you want to entertain. Portable, freestanding or built-in? One of the great advances in barbecues is the improvement of portable models that give you the flexibility to take your barbecue anywhere. So consider your lifestyle and whether you want a smaller, portable option or a larger model as a permanent fixture. Price. Bunnings says while choosing a quality barbecue is crucial, you need to take into account what you can afford. There is a wide range of barbecue sets available to suit all pockets and needs. WARM weather is the perfect reason to gather family and friends around a barbecue. If you don't have a barbecue set, now is the perfect time to invest in one. With so many varieties avail- able, buying one can be daunting. Electrolux recently conducted a survey showing Australians en- tertain with a barbecue at least three times a week in summer and demand more than a humble set. To support this trend, the hum- ble barbecue has evolved to de- liver the same level of sophisti- cation we expect from other kitchen appliances. Bunnings national leisure buyer Cameron Rist says modern barbecues are designed to har- monise with the environment. Mr Rist says with so many available, it's important to know what to look for starting with a budget. Then look at how often you will use the barbecue and number of people to entertain. Barbecue professionals at Wilt- shire say for small courtyards or balconies, consider a Weber or compact two-burner. Also think convenience, suggests BeefEater. For tiny spaces get a barbecue with wheels or folding legs. If space is abundant, there are sev- eral six-burner sets with lots of storage space and side burners. Apart from performance, more people are thinking of aesthetics. Don't forget to arm yourself with the best in accessories -- this will ensure your barbecue is kept clean and in top condition. CLEANING AND CARE ARE VITAL THE dangers of not looking after your barbecue are many --- poison- ing, gas leak and fat fire. Avoid this by regular cleaning and care. Joe's Barbeques has the follow- ing tips for preparation. Scrape and brush off barbecued deposits from the frame and roast- ing hood. Use a non-caustic barbe- cue cleaner. Spray and leave for couple of hours, then rinse and wipe off. Leave to dry thoroughly before spraying oil on plates and grills to form a protective layer. Clean out your drip tray, line with aluminium-foil (shiny side down) and a proper fat absorber. Check gas cylinder for dents, leaks and excessive rusting. Clean the exterior of your barbe- cue and cabinet trolleys with warm soapy water. Check the control knobs to en- sure they are free from obstruc- tion. Spray a can of WD40, which will loosen the friction if needed. Test your gas hose connection to ensure there are no leaks. Listen for hissing. Prior to your first use, preheat your barbecue for 5-10 minutes on high. Re-oil with Canola oil. You're now ready to grill.
