GARDENING A GREAT OUTDOORS SPRUCE UP YOUR BACKYARD FOR SUMMER If you're going on holiday, make a plan for keeping your pot plants alive while you're away. Janita Singh Group potplants to increase humidity and keep them out of shade in summer. Decks need to be regularly cleaned and maintained. SUMMER is one of the toughest times for the garden. Here are some tips from the experts to help keep yours looking its best. Garden solution expert Gardena says simple tasks like watering plants twice daily helps, while Yates garden adviser Judy Horton says you should check mulch and top-up if necessary -- but never spread it over dry soil. If you're going away, make plans for your garden's survival. Group pots together to increase humidity, move them into the shade, mulch the top of each pot and use water-saving crystals. Gather indoor pots in the bath on top of a dampened towel. When it comes to your lawn, never cut wet or dewy grass, says Victa, and keep lawnmower blades sharp. You should also aerate the lawn to allow nutrients and moisture to reach the roots. On the patio, simply cleaning pavers makes a difference. Boral Timber suggests sweeping regularly with a stiff-bristled broom. Pull out weeds and grass growing be- tween the pavers, and re-seal as required. And if your deck has seen better days, get sanding, says Kennards Hire. Remove stubborn stains and dirt with a pressure washer, then apply a sealant. ARE YOU SAFE AS HOUSES? Husqvarna's Tony Meyer, a Rural Fire Service volunteer, said trimming trees and removing dead branches will help. ''Trees should be trim- med to just above gutter height . . . Ideally no trees should be within five me- tres of the house,'' he said. Outdoor equipment ex- pert, Briggs & Stratton's Glenn Stubbs said sealing gaps in roofs, walls and under the house, checking generators and water pumps to ensure they are working and making an emergency bushfire plan helps. Cut back overhanging trees, keep grass short and gardens maintained Clean leaves from gut- ters, roofs and down pipes Store wood piles away from the house Plant trees with low oil content and make sure ho- ses reach around the house Metropolitan Built-in Wardrobes Pty Ltd FREE MEASURE & QUOTE SHOWROOM OPEN 6 DAYS Mon- Fri 8.00am - 4.00pm Sat 8.00am - 12.30pm T: 9763 5899, F: 9763 5877 www.metropolitanwardrobes.com.au Unit 6, 1-15 Wentworth Rd Nth, Homebush (off Bellona Ave) 15 YEARS GUARANTEED 2141582i hln wk39 Lic. 137155c 1582-1584 Canterbury Road, Punchbowl www.atoptide.com.au Tel: 97086888, 97086688 Fax:97086655 Mobile: 0452183168, Email: email@example.com $90+ $320+ $180+ $90 $30+ $90+ $500 $300 $180 Italian brand appliances GREAT DISCOUNTS FOR OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! 9 cabinets with polyurethane doors, plus 2 pieces of granite benchtops.
