BRING A REAL TREE HOME NOTHING LIKE PINE FRESH Janita Singh CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Selecting a tree can be a festive event in itself by taking the family and a camera to capture all the fun. TREE TIPS Take care when cutting a fresh Christmas tree, making a straight and sharp cut, says Leo Demasi (above) of the Dural Christmas Tree Farm. After bringing the tree home, place it in a stand with water. The tree will absorb more water so the container should be big enough to hold extra. Check water level daily. If water drops below the trunk, the trunk may seal itself and not be able to absorb water and will need to be cut again. Yates communications manager Judy Horton advises to display your Christmas tree in a cool place, away from the heat, sunlit windows and fireplaces, which can dry it quicker. If properly cared for, your real tree should last at least four weeks before drying out,'' she says. Details: yates.com.au; duralchristmastreefarm.com.au THERE'S nothing quite like a real Christmas tree to enhance the festive ambience in a home, with its fresh pine fragrance. Start your hunt now and con- sider these tips to ensure you bring home the real deal. Timing and freshness are im- portant, says Leo Demasi of the Dural Christmas Tree Farm, who has been supplying real Christmas trees in Sydney for over a decade. Mr Demasi also suggests taking the whole family along. ''Take your camera to the farm to capture your family choosing their fresh Christmas tree and interacting with the real reindeers and other farm animals,'' he says. Yates communications manager Judy Horton says cut trees should be bought closer to Christmas -- at least three weeks away. ''Visit a Christmas-tree farm to select and cut your own. Keep the cut base in water in a bucket, and top water as necessary,'' she says. When selecting a fresh Christ- mas tree, make sure the leaves look fresh and the branches are intact. Many people use the lifting and dropping method. This should not result in a shower of green needles if the tree is fresh. You should also be able to smell the pine freshness. Local nurseries and even hard- ware shops stock real Christmas trees. Shopping online is another option. But remember to order from reputable growers.
