FLEXO Magazine : December 2012
publisher’s ink Rituals & Rites of Passage Wrap it up—the year, the gifts, the business plan, the SourceBook, pretty much everything. Must be December—time for rituals. And, as usual, it seems that they are ever–expanding. Thankfully, here at FLEXO, we’ve got the process under control. Obviously, “control” is a driving force in this industry. Flexographic Technical As- sociation, its Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST) and most importantly its members are emphasizing measurements and documenta- tion, prioritizing processes, collecting data and using it to promote consistent, repeat- able, reliable, high quality results—no matter where in the world a package is printed. Miriam Webster’s dictionary agrees with their action plan. It defines control in two ways. “ Check, test and verify by evidence;” and “Skill in the use of a tool, instru- ment, technique or artistic medium.” How ’s that for falling in line with FIRST’s vision and its certification program? Right on! Also spot on, is Best Label’s execution of our flexographically printed December SourceBook cover. The team embraced FTA’s long-standing position, put process control into practice, fingerprinted the press, developed press profiles and G7 char- acterization curves; and even deliberately positioned targets right on the job inviting peers to verify the results. HIGH PROFILE PRESSRUN The story of the pressrun was captured for posterity utilizing multiple platforms. • An article on what transpired appears on page 32 • A link to a film clip, offering a glimpse at the job and first-person accounts of what happened is accessible from the QR code printed in Best Label’s inside cover advertisement • Short pictorial offerings, supplemented with eyewitness reports have been featured on www.flexography.org ever since the job was run Collectively, the content is not to be missed. The cover project stands as a testa- ment to the state of our industry. It ranks among our high profile annual rituals. FOCUS & FOOTPRINT When it comes to the portrait of the trade, the SourceBook and FTA Member- ship Directory itself are the definitive guide to FTA’s footprint, as well as that of its members. From printers and converters to manufacturers, distributors and prepress providers, onto the educational sector specialty service purveyors and even future flexographers—the roll call is both complete and comprehensive. Its collation and now its circulation, represents another annual ritual and rite of passage. Offering yet another nod to FTA and the work of its member volunteers, this issue contains final reports on two major Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC) research projects. • Extended Color Gamut Primaries • Anilox Measurement Gauge R&R Study Researchers described the anilox with familiar terminology, “heart of flexo,” yet the color gamut can be seen that way as well. Both teams pursued repeatable, reli- able, precision results. Sound familiar? Some see it as FTA’s trademark refrain. We see it as validation for and verification of the association’s work. Finally, as the calendar turns to 2013, and the organization prepares to celebrate its 55th anniversary, this edition of FLEXO embraces one other ritual—initial distribu- tion of the Forum/INFO*FLEX brochure. It’s polybagged with this issue, which you’ll find right on your desk, “Right Here, Right Now. ” 6 FleXO december 2012 www.flexography.org FTA TOdAY BOARD OF DIRECTORS FLEXOGRAPHIC TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION Jason Barrier, Printpack, Inc.
