DEMOGRAPHICS & DYNAMICS • Corrugated Forecast: Global demand for corrugated packaging will accelerate some 29 percent in the 60-month period stretching from 2012 to 2017. Sales will gradually build from $52 billion to $67 billion, reflecting typical annual growth of some 6 percent. At the same time, the volume of packaging produced will surge from 102 million tons to 130 million tons, representing an average annual growth rate of 4.4 percent. Smithers Pira predicts packaging for electrical goods and personal and house- hold care products to be the richest sectors for growth. Packaging for chilled, takeaway and ready-cooked foods is also set to be a primary factor for growth, with rising demand for convenience being a key propellant. • Flexible Packaging Forecast: Demand for flexible packaging pouches in the U.S. is projected to increase 5.1 percent per year to $8.8 billion in 2016.
