Stand-up pouch demand is slated to increase 7.2 percent annually with a market share of 22.7 percent through 2016. Pillow Paks should experience annual sales in- creases of 4.3 percent through 2016 when market share will approximate 44.3 percent. Side Seal products should see a 4.8 percent increase with 2016 market share of 33 percent. • Folding Carton Converting is a burgeoning business in the United States. Current sales of $8.8 billion are pro- jected to grow to $9.8 billion in 2016. Latest survey results by the FTA indicate that 73 percent of member converters report revenues were up for the last 12 months and they say the trend looks to be continuing. When it comes to folding carton converters, some 45 say sales trends are inching upward. • U.S . demand for cups and lids—Foodservice Packag- ing—is forecast to increase 4.1 percent per year to $8.9 billion in 2016, with growth driven by above average gains for food packaging cups and a favorable outlook for foodservice revenues. • Label Market Forecast: 2.4 percent GDP growth fore- casted globally Food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals remain the key end-use label market segments. Heat shrink sleeves show signs as being the most-favored format, evidencing high growth, even in the emerging economies. • Shipments of U.S. Packaging Machinery grew 19 per- cent in 2011, representing a value of $7.7 billion, accord- ing to the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI). Its 2012 Shipments Study, put out Oct. 4 , 2012, indicates total consumption in the United States actu- ally climbed by 23 percent and equated to $8.8 billion. PMMI’s Shipments Study finds that with $760 million, container/material-manufacturing accounts for about 10 percent of the total market. Following, with a 7 percent market share, was coding, printing, and marking stamp- ing and imprinting equipment. SUSTAINABILITY & SENSITIVITY • Today ’s emphasis on “right-sizing” will give way to strate- gies to use renewable and/or recyclable materials and smart packaging in 10 years – a clear call for innovation and collaboration throughout the value chain. Product life cycles will grow shorter and shorter, requiring creative versatile machines. Public awareness will increase and continual improvement of performance will be required.
