FLEXO Magazine : December 2012
Sean Teufler, Harper Graphic Solutions, was the co- chair of the 2012 FFTA Fall Conference. Over the past few years,Teufler 's "ink spitting" project has been an integral part of the FFTA's Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC). Through his work through Clemson University and Fox Valley Technical College, Teufler has been a strong supporter of promoting flexo through education. His drive is evident in his commitment to professional development, as he is a Certified Flexographic Press Operator. • 12th Annual FTA Environmental Excellence Awards: Pro- moflex International, St. Leonard, QC, Canada earned top honors; and The Label Printers, Aurora, IL earned an honorable mention. Promoflex International prevents pollution by reduc- ing the amount of waste generated by its production cycle and undertakes a complete recycling process for the components involved. Also, Promoflex raises environmental awareness among its workforce by providing staff with training and by implementing an efficient internal communication network. To further reduce its environmental footprint, the firm joined the EnviroClub program, which groups 10 companies from the Montreal region and offers training and counseling to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The Label Printers earned an honorable mention because of its "Go Green, Save Green, and Earn Green!" program, which is built on the premise that the company can only reduce costs by being a better environmental steward. As a result of the program, almost 70 percent of what had previously been solid waste and sent to a landfill, is now either recycled or converted into energy. The kick-off session, "FOG'D 2012: Reality Flexo," showcased consumer product company demands, applied them to actual commercial print production runs, laid results side-by-side and compared what is achieved on a flexographic press to the output on offset, gravure and digital machines. The event consisted of eight sessions including a pre- conference Flexo Quality Consortium Day. More than 45 presentations, covered the packaging printing and converting trade in its entirety; from com- petitive positioning to emerging trends, operational ex- cellence, high speed runs, expanded gamut printing, standards, FQC and Flexographic Image Reproduc- tion Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST). • Nearly 300 printers, converters and their business part- ners attended Flexographic Technical Association's Fall Conference from Oct. 15-17, 2012 in Milwaukee, WI. Forty- two exhibitors---the largest count in recent FTA Fall Con- ference history---sponsored the event where they stood ready and succeeded in facilitating constant interraction. The 2012 edition had a heavy emphasis on digital printing; with more than 60 percent of floor space dedicated to the process. Still, though, flexography was far from ignored. A myriad of new plate technologies, processors upgrades, press upgrades and other innovations made their world debut.
