KIDS PLAY HOUSE IN THE BACKYARD CREATE lasting childhood mem- ories by investing in a cubby or playhouse. Today's cubby houses are great to look at and even better to play in. And one in the backyard means hours of fun in a safe environment for children. Places like Kidzone Cubbies, Big W, Target, Deals Direct, Hip Kids, Playdex and Bunnings have play- ful ones, ready to assemble and with extras such as climbing fra- mes and slides. This holiday, take up the project of building one. Do your homework, have a plan, work out a budget and do as much research as possible before start- ing on the project. Work out the size and scale, what your child wants, material, colours and any extras such as slides, steps or a second storey. Actual doors and windows will add to design. However, keep in mind safety aspects and use child- friendly material. Or make a play- ful cardboard box playhouse using a large cardboard box and extra pieces of flat cardboard to fashion out a roof or chimney. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS PAINTING AND PLANTING ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILY FUN Janita Singh Keep the children busy with fun and educational activities these school holidays. GET CREATIVE A fun idea is to paint table tops, walls or toy boxes with Chalkboard paint and to encourage kids' artistic talents and imagination. The beauty of chalkboard paint is that the surface can be erased with a damp cloth to create a blank new canvas,'' says Dulux's Colour Expert Bree Leech. COMBINE play and learning for children by making holiday proj- ects a family affair. Child development expert and director of Kids First Children's Services Sonja Walker says parents who involve children in projects teach them independence and gives confidence. ''Bonding and communication can be fostered by taking time out to sit down with some paper, scissors and make fun things with kids," she says. A sustainable garden is another great place to start, says Bunnings Garden Care buyer Ashley Hazel- wood. ''It's a healthy way to let kids have fun over the holidays while keeping them off the couch and computer,'' he says. Lure them outdoors -- small things we take for granted can be a source of wonder for kids. Give them tasks of painting plant pots for summer display. Build a birdhouse or feeder. Make a worm farm. Get inspi- ration from The Thrifty Gardener, by horticulturist and columnist with Gardening Australia maga- zine and senior researcher for ABC TV's Gardening Australia Millie Ross. The book gives quirky ideas and alternative garden projects like building native bee-houses, out- door showers, edible cubby hou- ses, and bedspring frames for climbers, made from repurposed materials. Painting is another fun way to get kids involved, says Dulux's Colour Expert Bree Leech. It could be anything from help- ing paint their room to refreshing outdoor furniture, every child loves the idea of a paint brush in their hands. Ensure child safety. And re- member that not every DIY project needs to be for home improvement -- it can be just for fun.
