BE PREPARED THIS SEASON POOL FUN WITHOUT HARM Janita Singh Swim safety details: visit spasa.org.au Keep your swimming pool safe and well maintained and enjoy fun in the water with peace of mind. CHECK LIST Pool covers are important to keep pool water clean, retain heat and prevent evaporation but should never be considered a substitute for a fence or proper supervision. Some covers give the illusion of being solid but could sag if walked on, trapping a child underneath. Keep chemicals safely stored away from children. Keep breakables away from the pool area, check decking for rotting timbers and place No Diving' signs near the pool area. Learn to resuscitate. The Swimming Pools Act requires pool owners to display resuscitation charts around pools. Get these from local councils. Place lifesaving equipment such as a pole, ring (pictured) or rope around the swimming pool. SWIM SAFETY ENJOYING your pool is a great way to spend summer days, but it's important to make safety a priority. From checking fences and gates, to supervising chil- dren, here's a quick safety guide. The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of NSW says supervising children should take priority. Proper fencing is also important. The NSW Swimming Pool Act requires all swimming pools to be fenced (mini- mum 1.2m high) with self- closing and self-latching gates. Despite this, drown- ings still occur from broken gate locks or when children fit through fence bars. Fencing should be check- ed, making sure nothing is loose or has gaps. Furniture and any items children can climb on should not be left nearby. Be swim smart -- making sure children are familiar with water is one of the best investments. In emergencies -- be confi- dent and act fast. Pool ow- ners should complete a re- suscitation course. Seen any great ideas?
