CARE TIPS MORE THAN POT LUCK Herbs are easy to grow in pots. HERBS are a terrific choice for pots. Don't combine herbs with different growing conditions. For instance, basil likes plenty of water and liquid food but thyme wants drier soil and less feeding. Place them close to the kitchen for easy access Not all herbs are the same. Find out if they are short or long stay. Annual herbs, such as basil, parsley and coriander, never last long. Know which ones are greedy feeders --- basil, parsley, dill, chives love lots of water and food. Routine care --- regular watering and feeding will keep them in great shape. Growing tips --- sage, oregano, rosemary and thyme are all Mediterranean herbs that like sunshine, well-drained soils and a dry summer. Watch for pests and trim if you haven't used them lately. HOME GARDEN GROW HERBS AT HOME FROM LITTLE SEEDS, BIG PLANTS GROW Herb gardens are a practical and flavoursome start for those wanting to grow produce at home. SUMMER is the perfect season to start a herb garden. Horticulturist, author and television personality Don Burke says homeowners have adopted new and smarter ways to save the planet (and money) and this includes growing their own produce. In his latest book, Organic, Burke explains why it's sensible to grow your own and the versatility of a herb patch. Herbs can be grown anywhere from a window box to a desig- nated bed. Grown in flower gardens, herbs can also provide some pest control. Choose a planting site where they can thrive and survive. A guide to growing organic food, Organic looks at sustain- able living in small spaces, clever ideas for small back- yards, safer pest controls, back- yard poultry and more. ''As a six-year-old, I started my own vegie garden. I remem- ber the superb taste of my first crop and how proud I was,'' Burke says. Yates communication man- ager Judy Horton says growing herbs is a fresh start to the year. Basil is a favourite because of its tropical origins. Seeds can be sown straight into the soil -- no fiddly transplanting. Watch out for those really hot days. OVENS HEAT UP SMART INVENTIONS REALITY TV cooking shows are drawing more people back to the kitchen. There has been a nationwide rush on updating the home kitchen with designer appliances like stainless-steel work benches, shiny utensils and high- performance appliances. Designers have answered the call with clever products -- good enough to feature on television sets but convenient enough for the home. ''What shows like Masterchef have done is encourage people to explore, inspire and create what is possible in the home kitchen,'' ILVE marketing manager Daniel Bertuccio says. Ovens, particularly, are changing their form and function, with some kitchens demanding two. ''The idea of a secondary oven is no longer considered a luxury as much,'' he said. Ovens have grown rapidly, with many offering different functions. ILVE has laun- ched their second 60cm Pyrolytic built-in oven with cleaning phase technology. The oven self-cleans, reducing food re- mains to ash with exposure to temperatures of up to 465C and is designed to stay locked until the process is complete. ''Choose an appliance to best suit your lifestyle -- now and for the future,'' Mr Bertuccio says. • 2 x Mirror doors • Wall to wall up to 2.4m wide • 1 x Single Hanging space • 1 x Draw unit (4 draws) + 3 shelving •1xShoerack • 1 x Double hanging space • 3 x mirror doors •Walltowallupto 3.6m wide Bankstown 9786 0395e Surcharge applies to Campbelltown area Wally's Wardrobe World 2173633i hlc wk49 up to 2.4m wide up to 3.6m wide 2.4m high 2.4m high $570 inc GST $870 inc GST Renovating?
