DISPENSING SYSTEMS An ink dispensing system features the dispenser, linked to several barrels of base inks, by stainless steel valves to ensure fast and accurate dispensing. The process is com- puter controlled. The operator enters requirements into the interface, the dosage volume is calculated, flow from the cor- responding barrels is activated and the color is dispensed. Varieties of dispensing systems are adapted for ink quantity or ink set requirements. Cartridge-holding dispensers, cater- ing for up to 5 kg batches, are suited for label printing runs, while systems for flexible packaging or corrugated board, catering for multi-million unit printruns, may dispense up to 55 lb/25 kg. Modularity is important: some systems connect up to 32 barrels of base inks, which is beneficial if different ink sets are used intermittently throughout the production schedule. Other ownership cost-reducing features are level of air con- sumption, having as few moving parts as possible, automatic cleaners that activate after each dispense cycle and hose connectors that prevent dripping when replacing barrels. Precision is guaranteed. Dosages are dispensed in accura- cies of 0.002 lb/1g. Recipes take just a few minutes to prepare and dispense. Any leftover ink can be reused in new calcula- tions. Printers adopting automated dispensing for the first time report ink-yield boosts of up to 30 percent. TRACKING TOOLS Management information software (MIS) schedules production runs, tracks batch numbers, produces manage- ment and forecasting reports, and, perhaps for the first time, produces a precise ink costing of each job. This is only possible if the dispenser’s ink management software (IMS) integrates easily with the printing house’s ex- isting software systems, so information can be widely acces- sible to company staff. Brand owners increasingly require a means of tracing the raw materials used for the packaging of food and pharmaceutical goods, through the supply chain to the source. Ink manage- ment software can help printers to trace the lot code of the base inks applied for a particular spot color, even if press return inks are processed. Batch ink management software can also reduce setup times by allowing the printer to store a database of commonly used, complex ink recipe formulations that can be re- called at the touch of a button. In addition, real-time information on recipe availability enables quick response manufacturing. TABLE-TOP PROOFING A third element is the table-top proofing system, which provides precise flexo color predictability offline, without the need for fingerprinting. It is an automated wet-proofing solution that lets ink lab technicians preflight their formulations under www.flexography.org january 2013 FLEXO 31
