SUMMER GARDENS MANAGE THE HEAT KEEPING PLANTS HAPPY, HEALTHY Take extra care of potted plants and young seedlings on hot days. SUMMER is a tough time for gardens. Heat dries out soil and destroys plants at a time when garden owners are distracted by hol- idays, says Yates communications manager Judy Horton. ''Simple precautions like watering before temperature rises helps. Take care of potted plants and young seedlings. Erect temporary shade for vulnerable plants,'' she says. Also check to see if plants need water. ''Your finger makes a terrific in-built moisture-testing device,'' she says. ''Push it through the mulch layer to see if soil is moist. Give enough water to penetrate roots. Short, surface waterings only encourage roots to stay near the surface where they dry out. ''Avoid watering with a hose nozzle deliver- ing a strong jet.'' Soil wetter encourages water to penetrate easily. ''Push aside any mulch before applying this and move it back into place,'' says Ms Horton. Mulching on top of pots and garden beds lengthens watering times. Choose mulch to suit garden style. Pebble mulches look good with modern gardens filled with structural plants. Organic mulches suit natural-style gardens. Have a mix of particle sizes. If particles are too big, the mulch and soil will dry quickly. Water crystals also absorb moisture. Pre-soak them in water as they'll swell many times their original size, before placing in soil. Don't put crystals on top of soil. They'll suck moisture out. built-in WARDROBES "EAUTIFUL PRACTICAL #534/- $%3)'.%$ 4/ 35)4 9/52 .%%$3 SEE US TODAY. . .
