Technologies & Techniques Adhesive Tapes optimizing the entire Printing Process By Joe Prunier Technological innovations within the flexographic print- ing industry are increasingly changing the dynamics of today ’s print operations. Presses are being designed to run at ever-increasing speeds. New plate and sleeve tech- nologies facilitate vastly improved print quality. The market is demanding increasingly shorter printruns to reduce working capital and allow for evolving and more frequent innovations in packaging graphics and promotions. The key to being successful in this business environment is to enhance production efficiency. To achieve this goal, processes must be optimized to expedite job changes and re- duce downtime wherever possible. Using innovative adhesive tapes designed specifically for the flexo printing industry can play a part in increased production efficiency. MOUNTING MATTERS One area of potential production efficiency lies within the printing plate mounting and demounting processes. One key to achieving efficiencies within the printing plate mounting and demounting areas lies in developing standardized, repeatable procedures for the mounting and demounting processes. Once an SOP (standard operating procedure) is devel- oped, the focus should turn to choosing the correct adhesives which are used on mounting tapes to bond printing plates onto cylinders and sleeves. ADHESIVE FACTOR In recent years, tape manufacturers have become aware of segmentation among flexographic printers into two primary groups: 1. Printers that print long-run jobs and want to maximize the long-term speed and output of the press 2. Printers that print multiple short-run jobs and need to maximize their processes between jobs Upon identifying, defining, and determining the needs of these segments of printers, tape manufacturers have devel- oped different adhesive systems to perform specific functions. Most plate mounting tapes are equipped with “differential ad- hesives”, which simply means that the tape is equipped with two different adhesive systems, one on either side of the tape. • The “open-side” adhesive, or the side of the tape not covered by the siliconized liner, is designed to bond to THE CRITICAL BOND & ITS BENEFITS • Reduce working capital • Allow frequent innovations in packaging graphics and promotions • Enhance production efficiencies • Expedite job changeovers and reduce downtime • Develop standardized, repeatable procedures for mounting and demounting plates • Choose correct adhesives to bond printing plates to cylinders and sleeves • Use the most technologically advanced foam formu- lations to achieve highest print quality 58 FLeXO feBruary 2013 www.flexography.org
