FLEXO Magazine : February 2013
“You never know, you just might meet that contact or sign that deal to make your year! It’s for sure that it won’t happen if you’re not there! and a converter well versed in what it takes in order to become certified. What is now a discussion topic may very well become our collective reality-another reason to be “Right Here, Right Now. ” NOT TO BE MISSED ...From a strictly defensive standpoint, your customers and your competitors are expected at Forum 2013. They will both be getting smarter, generating new ideas about how they will improve their value propositions to their customers and they will potentially discuss the future. From a more enlightened perspective, we know that knowledge is power, that listening to creative ideas can make us more creative and that; frankly, being a part of a quality group like FTA makes us better flexographers, if we truly engage in the discussions. You never know, you just might meet that contact or sign that deal to make your year! It’s for sure that it won’t happen if you’re not there! To me, it’s all one big package, where everybody is learning all of the time—we’re learning in the sessions, we’re learning at INFO*FLEX. When a potential customer sees a person serious enough about the business and the flexo process to be at the Forum and INFO*FLEX, he/she appreciates the ability to network with old friends, visit long-stand- ing good customers, identify potential leads and meet people who can teach and sometimes inspire us. REALITY CHECK ...T here was an old song that stated, ”What is hip today, may soon become passé.” • FIRST was nothing more than a discussion some years ago. I can remember a lot of people stating that flexo will never reach a Specifications for Web Offset Publications (SWOP) standardization level because “every flexographer feels that his/her par- ticular method or color set is a unique advantage.” Now, we hear about “running to the numbers” all of the time • Expanded Gamut was a concept a few years back, now it is a reality that we will discuss at length in San Diego • The idea of running 1,000 fpm flexible packaging was absurd, now, we run 2,000 fpm If there is anything that we should be proud of, it is that the people before us and the people potentially sitting next to you in San Diego, didn’t listen to someone who told them what they could not accomplish. When members of FTA’s Hall of Fame are introduced, please pay attention to the early practitioners who worked in a trade that printed aniline dyes on paper to read “This Side Up,” and managed to embrace technol- ogy, make continuous improvements and advance an industry. Look at the Best of Show winners in this year’s Excellence in Flexography Awards competition to see the impact of their vision. That is the story of flexography over the past 55 years. TREMENDOUS TAKE HOMES ... Learn a tremendous amount. See people that you’ll want to emulate. Meet mentors. Make a lot of friends. As someone who grew up in sales, I never wanted to be that “shoeshine and a smile” type of guy. What I learn from FTA gives me an ability to under- stand the printing process and the desire to learn more. With the assistance of many people and this organization I’m able to de- velop at least a bit of credibility. I have had, and still have, a lot of fun at every Forum I attend. You will get out of the San Diego Forum what you put into it. • Attend a session, I will bet that you will either learn something new or think about an aspect of your job or your company in a different way • At the Awards Banquet, you will see the history of the flexographic industry, view some great work from companies who seem to be at the top of their game and meet some great people • You’ll see those same people at INFO*FLEX and potentially discuss a problem or opportunity that you have with a subject matter expert And, I will venture to say that, you will leave with the feeling that you’re a part of something that speaks to the development of an entire industry over the past 55 years. See you in San Diego! n
