However, retrofitting a press two years after purchasing a new one generally costs 15 percent more. Daming adds, “If a converter has the job, the work and the means, he/she should buy it upfront.” Nevertheless, retrofitting can also be used as a cost sav- ings measure for those converters who ramp up capability on an old model. Adding on a module is far less expensive than investing in a new press. “T he retrofit market is on the upswing for a couple of reasons. Converters are feeling margin pressure and are wanting to either increase productivity with a new retrofit or converters are feeling competitive pressure and are wanting to branch out and diversify into new applications, requiring new equipment on their presses.” In those cases where margin pressure is a driver, convert- ers may choose to retrofit newer equipment with the latest technology offerings. This is the case with many Mark Andy customers who have chosen to retrofit their Performance Series machines with QCDC (Quick Change Die Cut) technol- ogy. Introduced at Labelexpo Americas 2012, QCDC has been proven to cut die changeover times by up to 80 percent over traditional on-press die cutting technology, and when combined with the high-speed stripping, the press’s annual capacity can be increased by 40 percent. In a mature market, converters would be wise to carefully examine how increased capability or productivity would bol- ster business, as organic growth will likely not be significant.
