Advancements in equipment, substrates, software, sample making and consulting firms have made adding shrink sleeves to your current portfo- lio easier, faster, and less costly than it was in the past. These developments allow almost any label converter or flexible packaging house to enter the shrink sleeve market quickly and at a minimum cost. EQUIPMENT & FLEXIBILITY Shrink sleeves can be printed with any style of printing from flexographic, to gravure, to digital, and offset. For many years, the preferred method to print shrink sleeves was gravure. However, advancements in technology in flexo have allowed flexo to rival the quality of gravure. The trend in narrow web flexo has moved converters into UV inks that allow product and chemical resistance for the label. New UV inks are more opaque, easier to print with, have excellent resistance properties and are low in odor. Using UV inks helps with press costs by allowing converters who run only one or two shifts to shutdown without the normal clean up at the end of the day. This results in a faster startup the next morning, since the team does not have to setup the press again. Full body shrink sleeves are attractive to consumer product companies that market multiple sKus. Here, formula is the differentiating factor and color communicates it on the shrink sleeve wrapper. 40 FLeXO MaRcH 2013 www.flexography.org BASICS OF BUSINESS • Small web seaming machines have allowed converters to enter the shrink sleeve market at half the cost that was previously needed • Most any label converter or flexible packaging house can enter the shrink sleeve market quickly and at a minimum cost • Knowing your equipment, software, substrate and consulting options can move you ahead of the competition and make your ventures profitable • Shrink sleeves can be printed with any style of printing.
