In addition, because the walls between cells are not as thick, the life of the ceramic roller is shortened. Also, a roller with deeper cells must be cleaned often and thoroughly, so that ink does not dry inside the cells, thus reducing their volume. (Figure 5). HIGH DEFINITION SOLUTIONS Extensive research and testing has recently shown that the shape of the cell can also affect how much of the cell’s ink capacity can be picked up by the plate. Hexagonal or honeycomb-like cell patterns have historically proven to be the most efficient shape on an anilox roller because they nest well and leave a relatively small land area. However, be- cause more high definition images are being created on digital plates, higher ink volumes are needed on rollers in the highest lpi ranges, in order to maintain density and clarity. New laser technology enables anilox roller engravers to create hybrid roller cells shaped like extended hexagons. (Figure 6). This reduces the amount of land area and creates more volume in each cell.
