of such work requires both open structure cell geometry and lower line count engravings to handle larger particle sizes, as well as to accommodate higher viscosity materials. CONSTANT CHALLENGES Optimize the anilox roll for consistent, repeatable print results. Extend product life, increase productivity and reduce operating costs. Scorelines (grooves in the engraving) or pickup lines (mate- rial built up on the engraving lands) are common occurrences that can be helped by optimizing blade setting and using filters and magnets to remove metal fines, paper dust, dried ink, etc, UV ink spitting or misting is still a challenge that can be helped by some doctor blade configurations and specialty anilox engravings that have more open structures that help the ink flow. Praxair NovalineTM UV Gold and IST engravings can reduce or eliminate ink spitting. LIFE-EXTENDING MEASURES Anilox rolls that start with a hard, dense ceramic coating as the foundation, generally have a longer roll life as the coating delivers good wear resistance and consistency of the engrav- ing. Process anilox rolls with low volume can have a shorter life as they have a small volume window to deliver the thin ink film that will cover the substrate and have minimal dot gain. Most anilox rolls can last several years if they are cared for and maintained well. Today, the vast majority of rolls are replaced due to physical damage to the roll face or edges and the engraving. To maximize roll life, work with your doctor blade suppliers to optimize blade materials and blade settings along with practic- ing good housekeeping practices. Rolls should be clean right after use to eliminate ink drying in the cells or linking with other ink systems. Caustic cleaning systems can be a concern for sensitive aluminum and sleeve applications. Automatic off press cleaning systems help greatly, especially when the cleaner is optimized for the ink system and safe for the roll base. n About the Author: Jean M. It operates from 31 global locations, including seven anilox roll plants on four continents. It laser- engraved the first laser engraved anilox roll in 1981. www.flexography.org June 2013 FLEXO 55 Safety Frequent roll handling can increase safety hazards such as back injuries and pinched fingers. Praxair’s long-lasting ceramic covers extend the life of the roll and reduce the number of times it has to be removed and sent out for repairs. Less handling means fewer potential injuries. Flame Treater Rolls, too! The same benefits of corona rolls are available in Praxair’s ceramic covers for flame treaters. How to Get Started. Contact Us Today.
