FLEXO Magazine : August 2013
Food Safety Standards Audits, Protocols, Compliance, Conformance & Certification Flexographic Technical Association’s 2013 Annual Forum bowed Sunday, April 28. Session One, “Life is Full of Options...Complying with Food Safety is Not One of Them,” drew a packed crowd that listened intently, then engaged in an open dialogue. Since time ran short several questions went unanswered, so FLEXO compiled the queries and presented them to the panelists. Their responses, as submitted for publication, appear in Q&A format, beginning on this page. Topics addressed cross a broad spectrum and range from Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to Safe Quality Food (SQF) and British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), and PACsecure—Food Safety Standards for the Packaging FAST FACTS • Certification audits cost $4,000 to $9,000 • GFSI schemes are complete food safety management systems • Audits, such as AIB, are more of an inspection of GMP’s and food safety programs • The goal of GFSI: one audit accepted by everyone • All issues regarding supplier accountability, traceability etc. are covered in the SQF audit “supplier approval” portion • Compliance is judged by customers, not suppliers 24 FLEXO August 2013 www.flexography.org FTA TODAY FOrum FLAshbAck
