FLEXO Magazine : August 2013
Industry. Comparisons are offered between SQF and American Insti- tute of Baking (AIB) and Internation- al Standards Organization (ISO) programs. Participating: Dan Doherty, Prairie State Group; Bruce Riddell, Spec- trum Label Corp.; Peter Cicero, Capjem; Jack Hamilton, EAGLE Food Registrations, Inc.; and Stephanie Donato, Bell Flavors and Fragrances. Riddell and Doherty served as session chairs. FLEXO: What is the true cost to become Level 3 SQF Certified? DOHERTY: It depends on where you are today with good GMPS, previous certi- fications and the size of your organiza- tion and facilities. HAMILTON: In general, an initial certification audit will cost anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000 and the follow-up annual audits will range from $4,000 to $8,000 . FLEXO: Do you see AIB-type programs going away and being replaced by SQF & BRC, or will they co-exist? DOHERTY: AIB is not GFSI recognized. That is beginning to play a role on com- panies’ decisions to renew AIB or move into a SQF or BRC type of program. HAMILTON: Those decisions will be driven by the market, as well as by which platform customers feel they get the most peace of mind from. If you look at the GFSI website, you will see all the retailers and producers that are behind GFSI. That is an indicator of what the future holds for accredited verses non- accredited audits. FLEXO: How does AIB certification fit with SQF? HAMILTON: GFSI schemes are more of a complete food safety management system, whereas audits, such as AIB, are more of an inspection of GMP’s and food safety programs. It is also all about what customers want. They are driving www.flexography.org august 2013 FLEXO 25 © 2013 Harper Cicero Doherty Donato Hamilton Riddell
