The file that's created uses the same separations that will be used to image plates, and is viewable in any Adobe reader program. Ed Dedman, Hewlett-Packard Co., ad- dressed the topic of digital printing in a flexo pressroom. "Digital Technology offers many benefits that can help you change the way you do business, and the way you provide products and services to your customers. It can serve to cement existing business, and open doors for new opportunities." He proclaimed that there is minimal competition within the flexible packaging market for digital, and that it can help flexographers break into short- run growth markets such as shrink sleeves and pouches. Phyllis Kerr, Global Packaging, led a series of presentations in the Sustainability Session geared toward pro- viding the answers. In fact, FIA's direc- tor of EHS services and special projects, Doreen M. Monteleone, Ph.D., said this is the primary concern of the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership-an alli- ance forged between FTA, SGIA (Specialty Graphic Imaging Association) and PIA/ GA TF (Printing Industries America/ FTA TODAY Graphic Arts Technical Foundation). The mission of the partnership: "To establish the printing and graphic communications industry as a leader within the business community for the adoption and promo- tion of sustainable business practices that are designed to reduce the global impact of the industry sector." She laid out the tentative criteria for becoming a certified SGP printer, and noted that the certifica- tion process is currently in beta testing. Expectations are that it will be finalized by this summer. "Sustainability is actually very personal and very individualistic," said Debbra Johnson, DuPont Packaging Graphics. "There isn't one right answer for sustain- ability-there are many right answers." She added. Your journey to a more sus- tainable business is dictated by where you are today." Johnson revealed prelimi- nary results of a study into flexography's current sustainability factor. Results were measured in mega-joules of non- renewable energy units and kilograms of greenhouse gases. The study is currently under peer review, inhibiting FLEXO from publishing the data. Martin Spatz, Sun Chemical Corp., re- viewed existing sustainability options for inks. He noted that water-based inks are 95 percent free ofVOCs (volatile organic compounds). Organic solvents have 50 percent VOCs at application, and UV/EB inks are VOC-free. He reminded attendees that "dry inks of less than 1 percent are not factored into compostability." Most ink formulations also avoid the use of heavy metals. There are a number of organic compounds already used in inks. They in- clude cellulose (nitro-, acetate, propionate), modified rosin, shellac, proteins, starches, esterified fatty acids and ethyl alcohol.
